The purpose of this article is to provide some reflections and considerations in relation to the way in which universities carry out postgraduate thesis advising, considering that the completion of a PhD thesis requires rigorous work both by the PhD student and by the advisors, with the academic unit in charge of the postgraduate program being responsible for the latter. In this regard, the aim of the article is to identify practices in the preparation of PhD theses in Peruvian universities in order to propose good practices in thesis advising, adopting measures to regulate the procedure and to ensure that the PhD student receives adequate guidance to achieve the objective of graduation with a high-quality academic paper through good practices. This is motivated by the fact that there are often different criteria not only among schools, but also among universities, regarding the way to g...

Objective: To evaluate the advantages of using movies as a tool in the teaching-learning process in medicine and health sciences PhD programs. Materials and methods: Twenty-one (21) PhD students participated in the study: nine (09) from the Universidad de San Martín de Porres (USMP) and twelve (12) from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM). Thirteen (13) were males and eight (08) were females. Males’ average age was 43.54 and females’ was 56.75. The advantages of using movies in the courses of medicine and health sciences PhD programs were evaluated with a four-part questionnaire, out of which three (03) parts collected quantitative data (in scale from 1 to 10) and one (01) obtained qualitative data. Results: The average score of the answers of the first part (watching movies before classwork) was 9.60, the average score of the second part (classwork) was 9.67 and th...

In this study we analyze the determinants of job satisfaction of doctorate holders in Spain. Specifically, we consider overall job satisfaction as well as basic and motivational satisfaction following Herzberg’s typology (based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs). Using data from the Spanish Survey on Human Resources in Science and Technology of 2009, representative of the Spanish doctoral graduate population, we develop an analysis by gender and institutional sector (university and non-university) where employees are employed. We propose OLS regression to identify the determinants of basic and motivational satisfaction at job as well as an ordered logit model for overall job satisfaction. Results do not allow us to confirm Herzberg’s differentiation for the Spanish PhD holders, since factors related with basic motivation (such as salary or working conditions referred to ‘safety’) ...

Ph.D. theses represent the culmination of post-graduate education for doctoral candidates, and are also the starting point for junior researchers’ academic careers. Post-graduate studies in Journalism allow in-depth research into different aspects of reality. In that sense, a Ph.D. thesis represents an intense, in-depth piece of work which observes social facts linked to different knowledge perspectives. Studying the acquisition of a Ph.D. through a piece of research is a way to gain more in-depth knowledge of post-graduates in Journalism coming from Spanish universities. The study has the Communication (Journalism, Audiovisual Communication, Advertising, and Public Relations) theses defended in Spanish universities as its raw material: some 2784 pieces of work registered between 2007 and 2018. The research unit of analysis focuses exclusively on theses on Journalism defended between 2...

This article makes emphasize in the effect of contingency in the emergence of Chavez and the Bolivarian movement, through the micro-structuring of his path to power. Based on interviews to key actors conducted by journalists and historians, we present an analytical history of five contingency dynamics: the positive impact on public opinion of the February 1992 coup, the formation of a singular revolutionary coalition, the mishaps by the military intelligence, the chance given to Chavez to redeem his the military failure, and the political system’s openness to electoral outsiders. We conclude that there were five elements that paved this path: the movement’s leadership strategy, the tree with three roots, the esprit de corps within the Armed Forces, Hugo Chavez network, and the radicalization of factionalism in the party system.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-driven head/neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) prevalence varies globally. We evaluated HPV DNA and p16INK4a in formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) HNSCC from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. Methods: HPV was genotyped by PCR-hybridization. All HPV DNA positive and some HPV DNA negative cases underwent p16INK4a immunohistochemistry. Results: HPV DNA was detected in 32.8%, 11.1%, and 17.8% of oropharyngeal (OPC), oral cavity (OCC) and laryngeal (LC) cancers, respectively. OPC HPV prevalence was higher in Colombia (94.7%), and Argentina (42.6%) compared to Brazil (10.6%) and Peru (0.0%). HPV-16 was the most detected. Other HPVs were found in LC. Higher rates of p16INK4a positivity were observed among HPV positive OPC/OCC cases compared to LC cases. Conclusions: Our results support a role for HPV-16 in a subset of HNSCC, corroborate the he...
