For much of the 20th century, Evangelical churches were a religious sector traditionally resistant to political participation. However, nowadays, they participate in public life and are key actors in certain political junctures due to their capacity to convene, mobilize and pressure. Faced with this scenario, this article aims to identify and explain the factors that allow us to understand the reactive politicization of Evangelical churches. For this, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with key actors and scholars, and different secondary sources were reviewed to trace the process and provide an explanation for this phenomenon. One of the issues gaining attention in the Peruvian social sciences is the growing political power harnessed by Evangelicals, especially on its ultra-conservative wing. This article will examine the factors that led to the progressive hegemonization of fundamentalism within the Peruvian Protestantism from 1980 onwards. This means, firstly, to review the key concepts of the discussion about the Evangelical identity, as well as to analyze the internal ideological tensions within said religious community. Thereby, delineating the historical process that has taken fundamentalism from a minority religious and cultural force into a political force aspiring to hegemonize the Peruvian religious and political stage.

En el año 2013 se presentó ante el Congreso peruano un proyecto de ley de Unión Civil en favor del reconocimiento de las parejas del mismo sexo. Frente a ello, resaltó la particular reacción del conservadurismo evangélico, el cual se presentó como un bloque organizado para defender a la “familia natural”. Durante gran parte del siglo XX, las iglesias evangélicas se caracterizaron por ser un sector religioso tradicionalmente resistente a la participación política; sin embargo, en la actualidad incursionan en la vida pública y son actores relevantes en ciertas coyunturas políticas por su capacidad de convocatoria, movilización y presión. Frente a ese escenario, esta investigación tiene como objetivo identificar y explicar los factores que permitan comprender la politización reactiva de las iglesias evangélicas. El presente estudio explora la relación entre el conservadurismo político, medido a través de las variables de RWA (RWA), Intolerancia a la Ambigüedad, Necesidad de Cierre Cognitivo y Apertura a la Experiencia, con la preferencia y familiaridad musical. Se realizó un estudio correlacional con una muestra de 227 participantes, examinando también variables sociodemográficas como nivel de religiosidad, orientación política, categoría de músico y edad. Mediante un análisis de clusters, se identificaron perfiles de personas más y menos conservadoras. Los resultados sugieren diferencias significativas en las preferencias y familiaridad por la música compleja entre individuos con distintos niveles de conservadurismo. In the following work it is argued that the failure in the construction of the Republic, the absence of solid republican institutions, the lack of a system of political parties and the predominance of military and civil caudillismo has one of its explanations in the predominance of a Jacobin political philosophy from Independence to the present day. For this, the author begins by clarifying the term “fundamentalist” in its original context, which is the evangelical fundamentalism in the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century. Following, important distinctions as “conservatism” and “fundamentalism” are performed. This article is dedicated to analyze the political project condensed in the Popular Renewal party under the leadership of businessman Rafael López Aliaga. A period that covers three electoral processes in three consecutive years is examined: extraordinary elections to Congress, national elections and municipal elections. López Aliaga, who is disputing the leadership of the opposition to Keiko Fujimori, is the representative of an extremely conservative right, which amalgamates politics and religion. Liberalism has always had its proponents, not only in the realm of ideological thought but also in popular culture. One of its most recognized representatives worldwide is Wonder Woman. This comic book character has always represented classic liberal values, such as the development of a personal life plan without the necessary intervention of a third party. In this episode, we’llanalyze the comics written by Tom King from the Dawn of DC series. In it, we’ll address the conflict between the superheroine and the well-known villain The Sovereign, a figure who champions conservative ideas. In this sense, we can see how the conflict between these two fictional characters reflects the current ideological struggle that exists in contemporary politics betweenliberals and conservatives.

Since the 1980s, Peru has witnessed a resurgence of Catholic conservatism. By analyzing the actions and ideologies of the Catholic right through the press and in Church documents, this article explains the unification of conservative Catholics via a mixture of: 1) an anti-leftist response to liberation theology, and 2) a rejection of the growing influence of feminism and the LGBTQ rights movement. Gradually, laypeople and the conservative clergy turned to conservative evangelicals as important allies in the fight against the alleged evils of abortion, leftist economics, and «gender ideology». This paper joins the literature on religious diversity in Peru and Latin America to show that while Catholic conservatism has experienced some setbacks, it remains strong even in the era of Pope Francis.
