Foucault and Benjamin exploited different themes and categories from Marx’s Capital, in accordance with their topics of interest and theoretical and political options. Foucault concentrated on the analysis of the relations of production as it concerned the disciplining of the working class by capital. Benjamin, based on the commodity fetishism, on the fascination of consumption and the mere patent consumer display in department stores. Both interpretations of Marx are treated in this article as complementary and convergent. In effect, starting from Marxian foundations, they allow us to trace a well-equipped genealogy of the submission of living beings to the modern relation of capital: a submission that continues under new forms in current capitalism. This text ends concluding this, opening a path yet to explore at the same time.

Materialism and Art in Walter Benjamin”. This paper analyses the issue of materialism and its relationship with art in Walter Benjamin’s thought. This is a controversial issue in the debates around Benjamin. The article examines in detail Benjamin’s two fundamental texts on this topic: The Author as Producer and The Work of Art in the Era of Mechanical Reproduction. Before this, the paper puts the problem into context, considering the times and, in particular, Benjamin’s relationship with Brecht, which was seen as one of the key elements to understand Benjamin’s material turn. This fact disturbed some of his colleagues —like Adorno, Horkheimer and Karplus— who saw Brecht as an excessively orthodox materialist. This paper argues, however, that, although Benjamin turned towards materialist positions throughout the decade of the 30s, his materialism was not like the one defend...

“Distorted Picture: on the Relationship Between Forgiveness and Deformity on Walter Benjamin’s Worka”. The hunchback we find here and there in Benjaminian texts, an image that Benjamin himself describes as the prototype of the distortion (“dem Urbilde der Entstellung”) is also the prototype of the subject in need of forgiveness. A critical reading of the places in which Benjamin refers to this “distorted image” offers the possibility of raising a theory of forgiveness (and, indirectly, of guilt and justice) that does not reduce forgiveness to a legal form, to some specific emotional dynamics, or to an exchange of moral conditions. Instead, I argue the Benjaminian hunchback endows our common understandings of forgiveness with a clear bodily dimension that is simply absent in most contemporary considerations of the matter.

“Walter Benjamin, Reader of Kafka: Study, Oblivion and Justice”. In this paper we propose to explore an aspect of Franz Kafka. On the Tenth Anniversary of his Death, an essay that Walter Benjamin wrote in 1934 for the Jüdische Rundschau, and to investigate an idea that does not develop there in extenso: the “study” (Studium). Throughout the text, we find that Benjamin relates this idea with two other concepts: first, he argues that study is opposed to “oblivion”, and, on the other hand, links study with the notion of justice. In this way, both characterizations seem to coexist in the essay about Kafka, without the author developing them in depth. The objective of this work is, then, to delve into each of them in order to clarify how Benjamin conceives the study so that it can be associated with both a struggle against oblivion and with justice.
