A pesar de sus estudios sobre diferentes temas realizados en estos ambientes, poco se conoce acerca de la situación actual de la calidad de agua de los humedales costeros. Es por ello que se planteó el objetivo de conocer los diferentes estudios que señalen la situación en la que se encuentra la calidad del recurso hídrico. Cinco humedales fueron estudiados: Pantanos de Villa, Humedales de Ventanilla, El Paraíso, Medio Mundo y Puerto Viejo. Se encontró que cada humedal presenta diferentes problemas de contaminación, lo cual tiene relación con la urbanización y actividades antrópicas de sus localidades.
