Las recomendaciones con respecto a los requerimientos nutricionales en bebés prematuros se han realizado con la finalidad de lograr un crecimiento y desarrollo óptimos para prevenir daños asociados tanto a déficit o como a excesos de nutrientes. Así mismo, la estandarización de protocolos que determinen las condiciones para el inicio de la alimentación enteral con lactancia materna exclusiva, su volumen de progresión y su fortificación se basan no solo en sus efectos benéficos sino en contribuir a la disminución de la temida enterocolitis necrotizante (NEC). Esta revisión presenta una síntesis de literatura sobre las características clínicas y los factores de riesgo de intolerancia alimentaria en recién nacidos prematuros, especialmente los de muy bajo peso al nacer (MBPN); así como, evidencia científica de la utilidad de la evaluación cualicuantitativa del residuo gástrico.
