Descripción
Sumario:Lepidium meyenii (Maca) is a peruvian plant that is attributed as immunostimulatory activity. The objective of this study was to verify the effect of atomized extract of red ecotype, dose: 150 mg / kg and 300mg/kg, on leukocyte count and cellularity of the spleen, thymus and bone marrow of mice immunosuppressed with cyclophosphamide. After twenty days of treatment and eight days after immunosuppression, we found that the group treated with 150 mg / kg (M2-IS) had a higher leukocyte count and cellularity in all lymphoid organs, compared to untreated group (IS); but is only significant when compared to the leukocytes, spleen and bone marrow; and when compared with the control group (C), the values were not always superior. Furthermore for all variables, except the bone marrow cellularity, the group that was given 300mg/kg of maca (M1-IS) had values greater than the IS group, the C group and even the M2 Group -IS, but always significant difference when compared only with the first of these three. Furthermore it is appreciated that the M1-IS group, lower values evidence, though no significant difference in cell counts and marrow compared to the IS and C groups. It is conclude that administration of maca at doses 150 mg / kg and 300 mg / kg, to mice immunosuppressed with cyclophosphamide; can reverse the suppressive effects of this cytotoxic agent, which was shown to encourage increased leukocyte count, the cells of the thymus and spleen; and decreasing the cell number in the bone marrow, probably by a restorative effect of immune homeostasis. Also these properties are dose dependent, being 300 mg / kg the optimal dose
