description Sobre la base de información cualitativa, el capítulo muestra cómo diferentes factores llevan a las mujeres jóvenes a iniciar una convivencia o matrimonio antes de la mayoría de edad. A través de las experiencias de tres mujeres que empezaron a convivir antes de los 18 años en el Perú, los autores muestran cómo es la vida para ellas, las inequidades en las relaciones de poder que enfrentan en su vida diaria y qué tan lejanas de la realidad están sus esperanzas y aspiraciones actuales. Además, los autores se preguntan sobre qué tan diferentes serían las vidas de estas jóvenes si existiese la posibilidad de cambiar algunas de las normas sociales. El análisis de estas experiencias de vida permite reflexionar sobre cómo la relación entre la pobreza, las desigualdades y las rígidas normas sociales de género conforman la base de un problema que limita las oportunidades de las mujeres y las deja vulnerables ante la violencia. Para este capítulo se analizó información de jóvenes que pertenecen a la muestra del estudio longitudinal Niños del Milenio y que fueron parte de la investigación “Matrimonio, convivencia, maternidad y paternidad temprana en el Perú”, que también se desarrolló en Etiopía, India y Zambia. Este capítulo es parte del libro Dreaming of a Better Life: Child Marriage Through Adolescent Eyes, que muestra evidencia y nuevos aprendizajes de un conjunto internacional de investigaciones y proyectos sobre “Matrimonio infantil y forzado” apoyados desde 2015 por International Centro de Investigaciones para el Desarrollo (IDRC) en Canadá.
