Lima: GRADE.En este capítulo los autores exploran el impacto del monitoreo comunitario ambiental (MCA) en territorios con una larga trayectoria minera en el Perú y Chile. Encuentran que esta iniciativa impacta positivamente en el empoderamiento político de las comunidades locales, las cuales lo convierten en una herramienta para recuperar el control de su entorno a través de la vigilancia ambiental y para reclamar justicia ambiental desde una perspectiva integral, que contempla los impactos negativos acumulativos de la minería en el ambiente y la salud humana. A través de los casos de Espinar y Quintero-Puchuncaví, se muestra cómo estas iniciativas, al politizar la generación de conocimiento, desafían los paradigmas de gobernanza ambiental estatal tradicionales, generalmente jerárquicos y centrados en el conocimiento de expertos, promoviendo –en cambio– formas más inclusivas y justas de gestión ambiental, pese a los desafíos de financiamiento y falta de reconocimiento oficial.In this chapter, the authors explore the impact of community environmental monitoring (MCA) in territories with a long history of mining in Peru and Chile. They find that this initiative has a positive impact on the political empowerment of local communities, which turn it into a tool to regain control of their environment through environmental monitoring and to claim environmental justice from an integral perspective, which takes into account the cumulative negative impacts of mining on the environment and human health.
