A. Yarleque, S. Campos, E. Escobar, F. Lazo, N. Sanchez, S. Hyslop, N. A. Marsh, P. J. Butterworth and R. G. Price. Isolation and characterization of a fibrinogen-clotting enzyme from venom of the snake Lachesis muta muta(Peruvian bushmaster). Toxicon27, 1189–1197, 1989.—A fibrinogen-clotting enzyme from the venom of the Peruvian bushmaster snake was purified to homogeneity by gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 followed by DEAE-cellulose ion-exchange chromatography using a linear ionic strength gradient with NaCl.

Bothrops atrox is the main venomous snake in the Amazonic region of Peru, because it is responsible of the majority of human ophidic accidents. For this reason, variation into chemical composition as well as enzymatic activities on this venom were studied in relation to age, considering 3 groups of captivity snakes: young of 1 and 2 years respectively as well as adult, major of 5 years. The venom obtained from the three groups was pooled, Iyophilized and properly dissolved into saline solution. Protein concentration at 280 nm and by Lowry's method was calculated into each venom sample. Besides, protein bands were determined by PAGE-SIDS. In addition, the following enzymatic activities were determined: caseinolytic, Amidolytic on BAPNA, coagulant, hialuroniclase, L-aminoacidoxidase (LAO) and fosfolipase A 2-Biological effects such as hemorrhage and edema were assayed on white mice. The re...

Snakebite envenoming is a neglected public pathology, affecting especially rural communities or isolated areas of tropical and subtropical Latin American countries. The parenteral administration of antivenom is the mainstay and the only validated treatment of snake bite envenoming. Here, we assess the efficacy of polyspecific anti-Bothrops serum (α-BS) produced in the Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS, Peru) and at the Fundação Ezequiel Dias (FUNED, Brazil), to neutralize the main toxic activities induced by five medically-relevant venoms of: Bothrops atrox, B. barnetti, and B. pictus from Peru, and the Brazilian B. jararaca and B. leucurus, all of them inhabiting different geographical locations.
