Bagdad, como capital del imperio musulmán abasida, fue, por quinientos años, uno de los centros de las ciencias, las letras y las artes. Su apogeo se mantuvo hasta 1250, cuando los tártaros y mongoles, liderados por Gengis Khan, la redujeron a cenizas. Tomó siglos hasta que Bagdad y otras ciudades islámicas del Medio Oriente recuperaran la gloria de este período que inspiró obras como Las mil y una noches y proporcionó, a la civilización occidental, grandes poetas, filósofos y, sobre todo, matemáticos.

La mayoría de las cadenas de noticias norteamericanas siguió las pautas de CNN, mostrando más lealtad al gobierno estadounidense que a la audiencia de ese país y del mundo entero. Este «reclutamiento» de los medios de comunicación norteamericanos por parte de su gobierno no ha sido forzoso, aunque también fue estimulado por la administración Bush en nombre de la defensa del país.

Las rebeliones populares en el Oriente Medio y el Magreb (países árabes del norte de África), a las que la prensa calificó como «primavera árabe», despertaron esperanzas para algunos e incertidumbres para otros, sobre la posibilidad de que estas naciones adopten o, adapten a su cultura, el sistema democrático occidental. ¿Pueden sociedades que nunca vivieron en democracias liberales -que se consolidaron de manera muy gradual y traumática en Europa- transformarse en poco tiempo en ciudadanos de repúblicas con gobiernos tolerantes al pluralismo, la libertad y elecciones transparentes? ¿Es comparable el caso de Egipto con el de Libia, o con Bahréin, al analizar el movimiento de protestas que ocurren en esas naciones y en el resto del mundo árabe?

El objetivo del presente trabajo es revisar conceptos empleados en el análisis político y de conflictos, cuyos sentidos, suelen alterarse a medida que se banalizan sus significados originales. Dado que a) el interés de este estudio lo constituyen los orígenes y la evolución en el tiempo de los términos que se irán presentando a lo largo del mismo, además de la polémica que ellos generan y b) el mal uso, o abuso, que tanto periodistas como analistas hacen de los conceptos a revisar; este trabajo se enfoca en los debates académicos y políticos sobre los sistemas autocráticos que, hoy, se confunden entre sí hasta tal punto que incluso los organismos internacionales llegan a aceptar como democráticos a varios gobiernos que distan mucho de respetar la base de este sistema fundamentado en tres ejes: elecciones libres y justas; imperio de la ley y respeto total a la libertad.
