The objective of the present study was to detect the presence of Salmonella spp. in 30 motelo turtles (Geochelone denticulata) in a zoo of the Iquitos region, Peru. Fecal samples were obtained by rectal swaps and processed by bacteriological and biochemical cultivation tests. The results showed that 6.7% of the samples were positive to Salmonella spp. and the typing indicated Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serotype typhimurium.

Purpose: Pregnancy is a period in a woman’s life that has important consequences on oral health, particularly for gingival health. Present study aims to identify women at higher risk of developing periodontal disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) during late pregnancy and evaluate how this condition evolves during this period. Methods: Prospective cohort study was designed with pregnant women who were assessed during the first and third trimesters of gestation in a southern Spanish public hospital. Data regarding gingival and periodontal health, oral hygiene, and overall health status (obesity and diabetes mellitus) were collected. Reporting followed STROBE checklist. Results: Significantly higher number of women had the periodontal and gingival disease in the third trimester of gestation compared with in early pregnancy. In the third trimester of gestation, 42 (28.6%) and 63 (42.9%) ...

Forest fires are the main threat to ecosystems and human life. The frequency, seasonality, extent and severity of fires affect ecosystems and the physical and chemical properties of the soil by direct (heating) and indirect (ash) effects. This could affect biodiversity and forest residency in the face of climate change. In this study, we evaluated the impact of fire severity on soil physical and chemical properties caused by forest fires in a high Andean area of Peru. For this purpose, the severity levels, the degree of hydrophobicity, and the physical and chemical properties of the soil were analyzed by sampling in affected areas (Pinus radiata D. Don plantation and shrubland) and unaffected areas. The results showed a very low severity in soil components, with a strong hydrophobicity, more persistent in the forest plantation area than in the shrubland. The physical properties of the so...

Summary: Breast-implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a non-Hodgkin lymphoma that arises in the space between the surface of a breast implant and the fibrous capsule that grows around the implant. Since its first description 20 years ago, almost 1000 cases of BIA-ALCL have been diagnosed worldwide. Nowadays, guidelines describe the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of this disease. We present the first two cases diagnosed and treated in Peru, demonstrating a wide range of aggressiveness of BIA-ALCL. © Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery - Global Open. All rights reserved.
