In June 2012, as a result of a marine phenomenon that resulted in the death of birds of several species of seabirds, endoparasites were studied in two pelicans (Pelecanus thagus) and two penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) found dead on the beach in the district of Chorrillos, Lima (Peru). The helminths were obtained from the digestive tract in both species using the Travassos protocols. The nematodes Contracaecum rudolphii and Syngamus trachea, the cestode Tetrabothrius sp, the trematode Galactosomum puffini and the acanthocephalan Corynosoma sp were identified in Pelecanus thagus. In Spheniscus humboldti, the trematode Cardiocephaloides physalis and the nematodes Contracaecum pelagicum and Cyathostoma phenisci were identified. Syngamus trachea, Galactosomum puffini, Corynosoma sp and Contracaecum pelagicum are considered new reports in Pelecanus thagus in Peru. In addition, Spheniscus humb...

The aim of this study was to compare the techniques of indirect immunofluorescence (IFAT) and Enzimo inmunoensayo (ELISA) techniques for the diagnosis of Neospora caninum Dubey, Carpenter, Speer, Topper & Uggla, 1988 in alpacas from the highlands of Peru. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and concordance of IFAT were evaluated using a commercial competitive ELISA kit (cELISA - VMRD) as a reference. 1540 sera samples were collected from alpacas naturally exposed to N. caninum. The results showed good sensitivity (92.95%), high specificity (99.75%), positive predictive value of 92.90% and a negative predictive value of 99.04%. The concordance between both diagnostic techniques (IFAT and ELISA) turned out to be almost perfect (k = 0.98). It is concluded that the IFAT test has a high efficiency for the diagnosis of N. caninum in alpacas.

The aim of this study was to identify gastrointestinal parasites present in wild yellow-tailed woolly monkey (Lagothrix flavicauda) in the Corosha district, Amazonas department, Peru. Twenty fecal samples were collected immediately after defecation. Each sample was separated into two portions to be fixed in 10% formalin at 65 ºC and in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The samples were analyzed using the Direct, Ritchie, Sheather Sugar, Gomori trichrome staining and modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining methods. The gastrointestinal parasites found were four nematodes (Capillaria sp, Ancylostoma sp, Strongyloides cebus, Strongyloides sp), one cestode (Paratriotaenia oedipomidatis), one acantocephalus (Prosthenorchis elegans) and three protozoa (Entamoeba coli, Cryptosporidium sp, Coccidia sp. Coccidia sp is a new genus reported for Lagothrix flavicauda.

Our objective was to identify the direct and indirect presence of Neospora caninum in dairy cattle and their aborted fetuses from Lima, Peru. A total 219 blood samples obtained from dairy cattle with records of spontaneous abortion were collected to detect antibodies against N. caninum in serum with indirect ELISA and search for risk-factor associations. 68 fetal aborted tissue samples of these cows were analyzed by PCR, indirect ELISA and histopathology assay to detect N. caninum presence. The prevalence ratio (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated. Univariate analysis was performed using the chi-squared test. Among the 68 aborted fetuses collected, 10 (15%) were positive in at least two diagnostic tests. Among 219 serum samples, 46.6% (95% CI: 40.0%-53.3%) were positive. Cows with 4 years or older (PR: 7.10; 95% CI: 4.89-10.67) and multiparous (PR: 1.76; 95% CI: 1.11-2.8...
