Objectives: To determine in vitro anti-Trypanosoma cruzi activity of essential oils of 10 plants, cytotoxic activity of oils against mammalian cells and modulatory activity of oils on nitric oxide. Design: In vitro analytical-experimental research, prospective longitudinal cutting. Setting: Institute of Clinical Research, and Institute of Tropical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru. Biological material: Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes; Raw 264.7 cells; ten medicinal plants: Mentha X piperita L (menta), Rosmarinus officinalis L (romero), Chenopodium ambrosioides L (paico), Eucaliptus globulus Labill (eucalipto), Artemisia absinthium L (ajenjo), Melissa officinalis L (toronjil), Minthostachys setosa Brig (muña), Cimbopogon citratus (hierba luisa), Aloysia triphylla (cedrón), and Mentha spicata L (hierba buena). Methods: The trypanocidal ac...

The purpose of this study was to determine the in vitro antileishmanial activity of the methanol extract of seven medicinal plants, and the effect on nitric oxide production in macrophages. The extracts in concentration of 250 μg/mL were tested against intracellular amastigotes. Mouse peritoneal macrophages infected with Leishmania peruviana were stained with Giemsa and examined microscopically to determine the parasite load by 100 macrophages. Nitric oxide was determined indirectly by its conversion to nitrite. Piper aduncum (matico) reduced the survival of amastigotes to 51,30% (p < 0,001), also observed a slight effect of Eucalyptus globulus (eucalyptus) and Punica granatum (pomegranate), while Annona cherimola (custard), Annona muricata (graviola) and Origanum vulgare (oregano) were inactive. Nitric oxide production by macrophages was increased significantly by the effect of Anno...

Objective: To determine anti-Trypanosoma cruzi effect of Cymbopogon citratus essential oil in Balb/c mice. Design: Experimental, prospective study. Setting: Institute of Clinical Research and Institute of Tropical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru. Biological material: Cymbopogon citrates essential oil; Balb/c albino mice. Interventions: Animals were randomly assigned to six groups (n = 15): infected and untreated (G1), infected and treated with benznidazole 100 mg/kg (G2), infected and treated with essential oil of Cymbopogon citratus 100 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg (G3 and G4, respectively), uninfected and untreated (G5), and uninfected and treated with 250 mg/kg of Cymbopogon citratus (G6). Infection with T. cruzi was conducted with 104 blood trypomastigotes and treatment began on 8th day post infection (dpi) through 28th dpi. Parasitemia was ...

Objectives: To determine the composition of Lutzomyia species at the Rimac valley. Material and methods: The area studied was the Ullupampa annex (2000 msnm), San Jeronimo de Surco district, Huarochiri province, Lima. The sandflies were captured using Shannon traps, CDC light traps and direct capture, in intra and peridomiciliary ambient and natural refuges. Results: We identified 1742 phlebotomine sandflies of the Lutzomyia genus, 52,6% corresponded to Lutzomyia verrucarum, 28,2% to Lutzomyia peruensis, and 19,2% to Lutzomyia noguchi; the first two were more abundant in intra and peridomiciliary ambients, and the latest in natural refuges. Lutzomyia density presents seasonal variations, mostly found between March and May. Night activity peak is between 20 and 21 hours. Conclusions: Fruit cultivations surrounded housings separated by “pircas” and domestic animals within the house fav...
