This paper reviews the existing information on the group of birds known as vultures, birds specialized in ingesting carrion, distributed in almost all continents and with similar physical characteristics and behaviors. The objective of the review is to present the global problems and threats to which this group of birds is subjected, mainly due to the anthropic effect, loss of their natural habitat, lead poisoning, and provoked or accidental poisoning, among other factors, that have caused their disappearance in various countries and have placed them on the brink of extinction. The current state of conservation and main threats of the two large groups, vultures of the Old and New World, are reviewed.

The objective of the present study was to determine referential hematological values of the tufted capuchin (Cebus apella) maintained in captivity at the Patronato del Parque de Las Leyendas, Lima. A total of 32 primates (25 males and 7 females), among juveniles, sub adults and adults, in apparent good conditions were used. The primates were i.m. anesthetized with a combination of ketamine (10 mg/kg/bw) and xylazine (1 mg/kg/bw). The samples were obtained by puncture of the femoral vein using vacutainers with EDTA as anticoagulant. The red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) count were performed using the chamber of Neubauer, the platelet count and differential using the Wright stain, the hemoglobin (Hb) with the cianometahemoglobin method, the hematocrit (Ht) with the microhematocrit method and the eritrocitic indexes applying standard formulas with RBC, Hb and Ht values. The av...

The objective of the study was to determine the presence of antibodies against canine distemper virus (CDv) in jaguars (Panthera onca) and pumas (Puma concolor) of free life in Madre de Dios. The 19 samples (jaguars = 13, pumas = 6) were collected at the Río Los Amigos Conservation Concession (n=2) and the Tambopata National Reserve / Bahuaja Sonene National Park (n=17) during the routine activities of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2006-2008. The detection of antibodies against the CDv was carried out by the indirect immunofluorescence test (IFAT) in a dilution of 1:50. All free-living wild cats were negative for antibodies to CDv. The results indicate that these cats were not exposed to CDv.
