Objectives: To determine the association between left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) and pulmonary hypertension (PH) in rural Andean patients living at high altitude. Material and methods: observational, cross-sectional analytical study. PH and LVDD were defined and evaluated according to the guidelines of the American Society of Echocardiography. To evaluate the association, the generalized linear Poisson model with robust estimation was used. A value of p < 0.05 is significantly estimated. Results: 528 (100%) people with echocardiographic reports were included, with a median age of 67 years (interquartile range: 19 and 98), 58.71% (310) were women. LVDD was found in 20.5% (108) of the cases. The frequency of PH was 29.5% (154), corresponding to a mild, moderate and severe degree in 76.0%; 14.3% and 9.7% respectively. Simple regression analysis reported that people with LVD...

Objective: To determine the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with COVID-19 at a high-altitude hospital. Materials and methods: An observational, cross-sectional and analytical study carried out at the Hospital Daniel Alcides Carrión in Huancayo, Peru, located at 3,250 m a.s.l. The population consisted of 2,248 people. COVID-19 was diagnosed through serology testing and/or reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing. Data were recorded in a questionnaire. For the statistical analysis, the X2 test, Student’s t-test, and bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used. A p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The study population with a diagnosis of COVID-19 accounted for 760 patients (100 %), most of whom were males (474 individuals; 62.36 %). The average age was 49 years (range: 15 to 95). Most...

Introduction: Pulmonary infections by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) represent a serious clinical problem because they produce progressive, severe and difficult to treat pictures. Case report: We present two patients without immunosuppressive comorbidity with pulmonary infection by Mycobacterium abscessus and Mycobacterium kansasii, with clinical and radiographic improvement after receiving inhalation amikacin. The use of this drug added to standard therapy allowed a favorable evolution due to its high concentration in the alveolar tissue in infection by non-tuberculous mycobacteria. Discussion: Initial therapy to treat NTM infections based on a macrolide, ethambutol and rifampicin is often not sufficient. Inhalation amikacin is proposed as rescue therapy due to its potent antimicrobial activity, achieving a high concentration and a longer time in lung tissue with less toxic effects. ...
