Objective: To report the activity of a specialized emergency in Gynecology and Obstetrics. Location: Obstetrical Emergency Service at Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital (HNERM) of the Peruvian Social Security Institute. Patients and interventions: 19 856 attended and 13 486 hospitalized patients and 4 064 surgical interventions performed during 1994. Results: Average attention was 57 patients per day, 68% requiring hospitalization. Average patient was 31,7 years old with 2,4 pregnancies. The 3 200 cesarean sections represented 8,8 cesarean sections per day and 69,5% of all surgical interventions. Cesarean prevalence at HNERM was 35,45% in 1994, and 9O% of the cases were attended at the Obstetrical emergency. First cause of cesarean section was previous cesarean section (26%). Report of a case of a patient previously submitted to medical treatment surgical for primary infertility and developed as a result of the application of techniques of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer severe symptoms of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is making a wide review of the SHO, proper handling and how to prevent it. Commenting on the management received by this patient, emphasis on management alternatives that possibly prevented the patient had reached the brink of death.

0BJECTIVE: To review cases of acute appendicitis occurring during pregnancy and the puerperium. SUBJETS: Thirteen pregnant or puerperal patients acute appendicitis at the obstetrical and surgical emergency services. SETTING: Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital. DESIGN: Descriptive study cases of acute appendicitis confirmed by anatomo-pathological study that occurred durinq and the puerperium attended from January 1995 through March 1996 (15 months). During the same period, 10626 deliveries were attended and 1271 appendectomies were performed. RESULTS: Incidence of acute appendicitis was 1/817 deliveries (0,12%), occurring 1,02% during gestation, predominantly during the second trimester. Background: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) increases the risk for perinatal morbidity and mortality. Diagnoses vary according to reference growth curves. In our institution, Lubchenko’s curve is used primarily. Objectives: To build our own intrauterine growth curve (IGC) and compare it with Lubchenko's and Peruvian Ministry of Health’s (MINSA) curves regarding IUGR. Design: Observational, retrospective, comparative study. Setting: Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Obstetrics Critical Care Service, Hospital Nacional Edgardo Rebagliati Martins (HNERM), EsSalud, Lima, Peru. Participants: Neonates.
