The aim of this study was to determine the digestibility of dry matter and the digestible and metabolizable energy of the wheat by-product, corn germ and hominy feed by the in vivo digestibility test in guinea pigs, using the technique of total faeces and urine collection. Genetically improved young male guinea pigs (n=15) were distributed in three groups and fed with three diets: a) Basal diet (100% wheat by-product, protected vitamin C and water), b) Mixture I (70% corn germ and 30% basal diet) and Mixture II (70% hominy feed and 30% basal diet). The nutritional values of the diets were determined. The digestibility of corn germ, hominy feed and wheat by-product were 79.0, 81.2 and 65.3%, respectively, digestible energy was 4189, 4372 and 2801 kcal/kg of dry matter, respectively, and metabolizable energy was 3910, 4351 and 2705 kcal/kg of dry matter, respectively.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the productive performance and percent of fat in the carcass of two guinea pig(Cavia porcellus) genotypes fed for nine weeks with two types of diets. A Randomized Complete Design with 2x2 factorial arrangements was used: two genotypes (Cieneguilla-UNALM and Peru-INIA) and two diets (diet 1: concentrate supplement, forage and water, and diet 2: concentrate supplement with vitamin C and water). The final body weight, daily weight gain, dry matter intake, feed conversion, carcass weight and yield, and fat and moisture percentage of the carcasses were evaluated. The final body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion and carcass weight at 12 weeks of age in Cieneguilla animals was 1266 g, 15.6 g/day, 3.14 and 878 g respectively whereas in Peru animals was 1154 g, 13.6 g/day, 3.54 and 765 g respectively (p<0.05). The genotype did not affect dry mater i...

The purposes of this study were a) to evaluate the effect of random factors such as litter (L) and fixed effects such as season (S), calf sex (CS), and parity (P) on birth weight (BW) and weaning weight (WW); and b) to estimate the phenotypic correlation between BW and WW. The study was conducted in the Cieneguilla guinea pig farm of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina. The data comprised 5460 and 3514 records for BW and WW respectively of improved guinea pigs. The data was collected from January 2009 to July 2010. Weaning was at 14 days of age. The feeding system was based on broccoli crop residues (Brassica oleracea italica) and concentrate. SAS MIXED procedure (v 9.1) was used to analyze the mixed models. Total born (TB) was used as covariate for BW and born alive (BA) and age of weaning (AW) were used as covariate for WW. BW was influenced (p<0.01) by TB, S, CS and P, and W...

The study was carried out at the Cieneguilla guinea pig farm of La Molina National Agrarian University, Lima. The objective of the study were to evaluate the association of fixed factors such as season (E), parity (NP), and covariates such as maternal weight at parity (PMP), total born (TN), number of live births (LB) and age at weaning (EDC) with total born (TN), number born alive (NV), number weaned (ND), litter weight at birth (PCN), and litter weight at weaning (PCD), and to estimate phenotypic correlations between the maternal traits. Data was collected from 1302 litters collected from January 2009 to July 2010. Analysis of variance and F tests were performed using the GLM procedure of SAS (v. 9.1). The statistical analysis for TN and NV adjusted for the covariate PMP differences were obtained for E and NP (p<0.01); for ND adjusted for the covariate PMP differences were obtained ...

The aim of this study was to determine the applicability of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for the nutritional assessment of two important forage species in the country: alfalfa (Medicago sativa L) and red clover (Trifolium pratense L). For this, 75 samples of alfalfa varieties (SW 8210, WL 625HQ) and 75 of red clover varieties (Quiñequeli, Kendland) obtained from the paddocks of the IVITA El Mantaro Experimental Station, Junín region, Peru were used. Proximal analysis was performed determining the content of crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), crude fibre (CF), total ash (TA) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF), and the spectrum was captured using NIRS equipment. The calibration and validation models were developed to estimate the predictive capacity using Partial Least Squares (PLS), and the accuracy and precision statistics used were the Correlation Coefficient (R), Determinati...
