Introduction. One of the most significant indicators of quality in the academic endeavor of educational institutions is the academic performance of their student population. However, its study is complex, given its multi-causal nature. In view of the above, the general aim of this research was to identify those variables that could impact the academic performance (success or failure) of students admitted into a private university in Lima. Methodology. Two samples were taken corresponding to entrants of the two semesters of the academic year, for a total of 5040 participants (3515 from the first semester and 1889 from the second semester). The instruments applied were the Learning Strategies Questionnaire (Martínez Guerrero, 2004), the Vocational Self-Efficacy Sc ale (Carbonero Martín y Merino Tejedor, 2002), the Degree Maturity Questionnaire (Álvarez González et al., 2007), and the T...

Quality of life refers to the way in which the person perceives their daily experience, considering in this process the social and cultural component. This implies that to know the perception of the quality of life it is necessary to consider in its measurement the scope of physical, psychological, social, environmental and personal health. Along these lines, one of the instruments that is limited to this approach is the Barnes and Olson Quality of Life Scale (ECVOB). Objective. The purpose of the study was to determine the validity based on the internal structure and reliability of the ECVOB in schoolchildren and university students in Lima. Method. The study design is instrumental. The Spanish version of the ECVOB was used on a sample of 1239 students from Lima between males (57%) and females (43%) aged between 14 and 26 years (M age = 22.45; SD age = 3.75). The evidence of validity of...

The aim of this study is to explore, through rankings, tolerance towards morally debatable situations. The sample comprised 254 psychology college students (male and female) in Lima, 21-year old on average. The instrument used was the Morally Debatable Behaviors Scale. It is concluded that there is a similarity in the rankings by gender and age. In terms of religion, there are differences with the group of Evangelists, who are less tolerant than Catholics regarding pre-marital sexual relations. The impact of these results in understanding the tendency to action in terms of morality is discussed.

The purpose of this research was to compare the hierarchy of values among high school students, according to type of school (religious and secular) and sex. The sample was composed by 250 high school students (60.4% male, 52% religious school). The ages are in the range of 14 to 17 years (M = 15.47, SD = 0.63). The instrument used was the Portrait Value Questionnaire by Schwartz (2001), whose analysis of structure and internal consistency was satisfactory. To compare the hierarchy of values between the groups, top down correlations (rtd >) were used. According to the results, greater association (similarity) was found between the hierarchy of values depending on the type of school (rtd = .82) and, to a lesser degree by sex (rtd = .69). The comparative results show greater Benevolence, Self-Direction, Stimulation among women and Achievement among men. The implications of the comparative r...

Introduction: The main objective of the present research was to determine the effect of loneliness on Phubbing when Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) mediates this relationship. Method: The design is explanatory of latent variables, and three scales (Loneliness Scale, Fear of Missing Out Scale, and Phubbing Scale) were applied to a sample of 405 university students from two private universities in Metropolitan Lima. Results: It was found that there is an indirect, statistically significant effect of loneliness on Phubbing, through FoMO. Also, the total effect of the model was statistically significant. Furthermore, the independent variable (loneliness) significantly explains FoMO, and the mediating variable (FoMO) predicts Phubbing. Conclusions: Loneliness has an indirect effect on Phubbing through FoMO, implying that loneliness does not directly predict Phubbing, but when a person experiences ...

Intelligence is a psychological attribute that has been related to academic performance (Ayoub et al., 2022) and creativity in university students (Sánchez-Cid et al., 2018). In this sense, Dweck et al. (1995) remarked the importance of self-theories or self-perception about one's own intellectual capacity and the belief of whether it can be modifiable, for the achievement and academic success in higher education students. According to Sternberg (1985) theories explaining intelligence have been organized into two categories: implicit and explicit. Implicit theories refer to particular and personal beliefs based on experience and explicit theories emphasize the biological component and the conception of multiple intelligences. In other words, implicit theories of intelligence constitute a self-perception about one's own intellectual capacities. In this regard, studies have demonstrated t...

Currently, the study of non-cognitive variables and their effect on the academic performance of students has gained relevance. In view of that, the purpose of the present study was to analyze through structural equation modeling to what extent growth mindset, self-efficacy, and grit have direct effects on student performance. For this, an explanatory design of latent variables was followed, in which 305 university students participated, including men (41.8%) and women (58.2%), who reported an average age of 22.8 (SD = 3.5), all included due to convenience. To measure the independent variables, the ITIS (growth mindset), Grit-S (tenacity) and EPAESA (academic self-efficacy) were applied, while for the measurement of the dependent variable, the grades of the students of the two last semesters were used. Among the main findings, it is reported that growth mindset, grit, and self-efficacy ha...
