The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, an element of the tangible historical heritage of Peru, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, is undoubtedly one of the main tourist attractions in South America; which supports high tourist pressure, saturation problems and risk of impact on its conservation. In the present work, an audit of the level of quality in the tourist management of the site is carried out using the Delphi method. The vision of two types of specialists is obtained: academic and professional, in the tourism sector, on measures to mitigate the situation described and thus propose guidelines that aim to improve tourism competitiveness. Durante los Gobiernos de Alan García Pérez (2006-2011) y de Ollanta Humala Tasso (2011-2016), se empezaron a diseñar e implementar, desde el sector público, una serie de propuestas de activación y dinamización del repertorio turístico presente en entornos rurales del territorio peruano, basadas en activos naturales y culturales y en la producción agropecuaria y agroindustrial local. The COVID-19 pandemic has generated a global crisis that has impacted all human activities. One of the hardest hit is tourism which, by its very nature, faces the difficult and unavoidable challenge of creating the conditions to ensure, as far as possible, the health of tourists, generating in them the confidence necessary for a gradual return to activity. This article addresses this issue from an analysis of the current situation of tourism in Peru, to a set of proposals for its reactivation, both at a general level and in certain key subsectors.
