This review article collects some of the main criticisms of nature conservation and contributes to the debate on its resignification in the light of biocultural rights to enrich its conceptual and operational framework expressed in the figure of protected areas. For this purpose, a bibliographic review is carried out complemented by the participation of the author in the process of updating the Master Plan of the System of Protected Areas of Peru. The review and reflection conclude that until now a neoliberal conservation approach has predominated, which in practice produces a series of environmental, social, institutional, legal, political, and economic impacts given the complex nature of protected areas. All this situation is evident in explicit or latent conflcts between protected areas and indigenous peoples. To overcome the confrontation, it is necessary to resignify the conservatio...

The objective of this article is to review the validity of modern myths related to the Amazon and analyze their impact on public policies linked to the conservation of the Amazon. Based on a specialized bibliographic review, an inventory of modern myths related to the Amazon is made and then a classification is made for an analytical approach. Subsequently, a synthetic approach is made. Taking into account these results, it is discussed how these myths permeate public policies, the thinking and actions of forestry professionals and others involved with forests. As conclusions, it has been possible to recognize that there are still myths related to the Amazon regarding the indigenous people, the forests and the relations between the Amazon and Society. These modern myths are intertwined in time and can be transformed. The myths can be conceived as a system in which interrelations between ...

The purpose of this article is to establish the relationship between forestry and the other-than-human from the complexity approach, and to enrich the theoretical framework and practices of forestry by transcending the strictly anthropocentric perspective. From the review, reflection and analysis, it is found that the complexity sciences, by having a clearer orientation to the understanding of life in general, broaden the field of vision of forestry to recognition the intrinsic value of the other-than-human within forests. Although institutionally, National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) maintains the logic of forest resources with a productive orientation, in its structure provides a good framework for respecting the other-than-human of the forests. However, this logic does not guide the conception and practice of forestry professionals who, to a considerable extent, still maintai...

This article deals with the relationship between forestry sciences and justice with the aim of enriching the theoretical and operational framework of forestry sciences and of contributing to a better relationship between society and its forests. For this purpose, a specialized bibliographic review is carried out and complemented by contrasting it with the forestry reality in Peru. This shows that -from a forestry discipline perspective- forestry sciences consider that they do not have much to do with the issue of justice, which would correspond to other fields of knowledge. However, different types of justice are an integral part of their theory and practice when forests are understood as socio-ecosystems, a product of coupled systems that include forests, society and culture. The strongly anthropocentric conception of forestry science, which translates into public administration and for...

The objective of this reflection article is to account for the complexity of the approach to forest bioethics among the actors involved in the Peruvian Amazon in a context dominated by an anthropocentric perspective and the neoliberal capitalist system. For this purpose, bibliographic research was carried out and complemented by the discussions generated around the forestry philosophy cycle developed by Forest Fridays, the Peruvian virtual training space for forestry engineers, between August and September 2022. From the results of the reflection, it is concluded that the approach to forest bioethics in the Peruvian forestry sector is incipient, made difficult by a strongly sectoral, disciplinary framework marked by the development paradigm based on neoliberal capitalism. Complexity helps to have a much broader vision and inscribes it in the current challenges of searching for alternativ...

This review and reflection article deals with the complex interrelationships between Amazonia, biodiversity, flying rivers and national security. The objective is to suggest that the Peruvian Armed Forces, taking into account their role in national security, proactively engage in the conservation of the Amazon, the fight to reverse biodiversity loss and mitigate the effects of climate change. There is a close interrelationship between biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles and hydrological cycles, so the conservation of the Amazon has a fundamental role to achieve the welfare objectives of the Peruvian population and even at a continental and global level. In this sense, the Armed Forces, through their spaces of higher studies, have the opportunity to contribute to debate and action with emphasis on genuine and deep sustainability.
