Currently, university management is focused on implementing knowledge management through research, which has become an important tool for addressing the various problems that arise in our society, as well as for exploring diverse topics that contribute to scientific advancement. This also involves fostering a culture of publication. In this context, the adoption of strategies across different settings is urgently needed, particularly within universities, where students can serve as key sources of motivation and thus contribute to increasing scientific production in Peru.

Objective: determining the prevalence of obesity and overweight according to the type of family and the risk of acquiring non-communicable diseases (NCD).Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Participants were identified retroactively from students´ health cards. Obesity and overweight were determined basing on body mass index (BMI) and whereas for the risk of NCD waist circumference (WC) was used. Family type was classified as nuclear family, extended, expanded, single parent, reconstituted and family equivalent.Results: From 514 students, 43.4% were men and 56.6% women (Mean age 20.7 years; min. 15; max. 50; DS= 5. 66). The predominant type of family was nuclear family represented by 52.1% (n = 268). Introduction: Global mortality due to noncommunicable diseases is high and increasing. In Peru it represents 66% of the deaths. Objective: The objectives of this study were to determine the frequency of obesity and overweight, and to evaluate cardiovascular and metabolic risk. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study developed between July and November of 2016, the participants were faculty members of a private university located in the northern area of Lima. To determine the overweight and obesity was used the body mass index; cardiovascular and metabolic risks were assessed with the abdominal perimeter; and the risk of diabetes mellitus was determined using the FINDRISC questionnaire.
