The electric transmission system is the infrastructure that allows the transfer of energy from the production points to the consumption centers. It has the characteristic of regulated natural monopoly. For efficiency and economic equity in the electricity market, it is necessary that both the electrical losses and the costs incurred in the transmission process be properly distributed among all the agents that make use of this system. That is why around the world a series of methodologies have been developed that allow the regulators of the electrical system to set the transmission rates that assure their owners to recover the costs incurred in the construction, operation and maintenance and allow the efficient development of the Long-term network. In this context, this article reviews the different methodologies for assigning electrical losses and transmission costs at national and inter...

The transmission plan includes binding projects approved by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, which must be implemented over a 10-year period to ensure the quality, safety and efficiency of the national electricity system. This planning is carried out within the framework of the state duty to ensure the efficiency and continuity of the electricity supply. This document evaluates the criteria of generality, innovation and consumption to determine whether the transmission plan is a normative or administrative act. The general character of the plan is reviewed in accordance with these criteria, which does not necessarily determine whether it is a rule or an administrative act, since there are acts that have a general character and rules with particular application. The plan is also derived from a law, but requires other acts to be implemented. Finally, the plan is ended by fulfilling its pu...

The Unified power flow controller (UPFC) is the most important contribution of the power electronics in the modern Electrical Power Systems. The UPFC is able to decouple the control of the active and reactive power sent trough the transmission line. This control is performed byinjecting in series with the transmission line a voltage with regulated magnitude and phase, generated by a PWM voltage source inverter (VSI). When the current flow in the line originate in the inverter an active and reactive power. The active part of the power require to be eithersupplied or absorbed by a device, e.g. a second inverter. In this paper, simulation result obtained with a fundamental model of UPFC connected to a simple AC transmission system, and a control system base on "dq" transformation necessary to obtained the P and Q decoupled control ispresented.

One of the main challenges the Peruvian Electric System faces is the coordinated expansion of generation capacity and transmission to supply the demand requirements in the medium and long-term. Likewise, this process occurs in a context in which non-conventional renewable technologies such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind have experienced considerable cost reductions, which, added to the short development times that they entail, make them the ideal candidates to carry out the expansion of generation capacity. However, it is found that the country currently lacks the tools to carry out medium and long-term expansion planning considering these new technologies. Thus, this thesis presents 1) a methodology to synthesize hourly time series of solar PV and wind generation anywhere in the country, 2) a technique to reduce (cluster) the dimension of planning problems, and 3) an optimization m...

High penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) leads to new challenges for protection devices. Protection schemes are typically designed according to the dynamic behavior of rotating machines as generation sources, while the RES dynamic response, mainly governed by inverters, is not considered. Consequently, some relevant algorithms of transmission line protection are experiencing challenges because of the fact that magnitude and phase angle comparison, amount of negative-sequence, and short-circuit current level are afected by the RES. Therefore, an in-depth study of this issue is necessary, one which considers the main causes and new methodological criteria solutions. This work presents an extensive literature review of the evaluation of electrical protection performance and the efects of RES connected to a power grid through inverters. Bibliographic data on many representative pub...

The ongoing transformation of electrical power systems highlights the weaknesses of the protection schemes of traditional devices because they are designed and confgured according to traditional characteristics of the system. Therefore, this work proposes a new methodology to study the fault-generated high frequency transient signals in transmission lines through multiresolution analysis. The high frequency components are determined by a new digital fltering technique based on mathematical morphology theory and a spectral energy index. Consequently, wide spectra of signals in the time–frequency domain are obtained. The performance of this method is verifed on an electrical power system modeled in ATP-Draw, where simulation and test signals are developed for diferent locations, fault resistances, inception angles, high frequency noises, sampling frequencies, types of faults, and shapes ...

In the new global and local scenario, the advent of intelligent distribution networks or Smart Grids allows real-time collection of data on the operating status of the electricity grid. Based on this availability of data, it is feasible and convenient to predict consumption in the short term, from a few hours to a week. The hypothesis of the study is that the method used to present time variables to a prediction system of electricity consumption affects the results.

This article examines the transformation process undergone by the electrical system in the Paraíba Valley in the state of São Paulo and discusses the possibilities for developing the cities located along the transmission lines between the metropolises of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. From the 1930s to the 1950s, the Paraíba Valley went from a region whose electrical sector was fragmented and run by municipal enterprises, to one with an electrical system connected to the system of the Light company, and, finally, from the 1960s, the region began to receive its electricity from state companies. This study traces the trajectory of the electricity sector in this region and examines the relationship between this sector and economic development.

Operation is a fundamental process for companies engaged in power transmission, especially when it comes to the operation of power transformers, which are one of the main components of the electric power system and represent a large part of the investment required to implement these systems. To improve the quality of the operation of power transformers and ensure their reliability and safety, it is essential to monitor power supply interruptions and the electrical parameters that comprise them. Therefore, the objective of this research is to improve operating practices to minimize the impact of power supply interruption events on the consumer due to disconnections of 22.9 kV, 60 kV, 138 kV and 550 kV power transformers operated and maintained by ISA REP, one of the largest electric transmission companies in Peru. The results of this study, i.e. the analysis of technical operating indicat...
