In order to describe bovine neosporosis as a livestock health problem in the Andes, the determinants, epidemiology and control of this parasitosis were identified, for this purpose a review of the literature published in the ScienceDirect collection was made, finding that the canine is the main determinant for bovine neosporosis, as a propagator in the stable of the protozoan Neospora caninum, other factors are related to the components of the production system and cattle breeds; It was observed that horizontal transmission of bovine neosporosis occurs through dog excreta contaminating cattle feed and vertical transmission occurs in young cows with low immunity, thus affecting their offspring, with fetuses being infected by N. caninum, causing abortions or reproductive problems such as return to estrus or temporary loss of estrus, a situation that causes important economic losses for cat...

The workshop “Parasitic Zoonoses in the Context and Approach of One Health” was held within the framework of the International Congress of Neotropical Parasitology in 2024, an event that brought together multiple specialized symposia dedicated to the region’s health challenges. The purpose of the workshop was to strengthen the comprehensive understanding of parasitic zoonoses from the “One Health” paradigm, which recognizes the interdependence among human, animal, and environmental health as a single, dynamic, and deeply interconnected system. This article aims to disseminate an integrative disciplinary experience developed by the academic community under the One Health approach to parasitic zoonoses. The participation of specialists from Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay, and Brazil enriched the regional perspective and enabled the discussion of parasitological issues from diver...

Toxocariasis, a zoonotic parasitic infection primarily caused by Toxocara canis and T. cati, remains a neglected yet widespread public health issue in Latin America. This comprehensive review explores its biological, clinical, epidemiological, and socio-economic dimensions, emphasizing the disease’s underrecognition in endemic areas. Transmission occurs through accidental ingestion of embryonated eggs from contaminated environments, particularly affecting children in low-income settings. In humans, larvae migrate aberrantly, causing visceral, ocular, and neurological syndromes with substantial morbidity. The burden is compounded by limited diagnostic infrastructure, inconsistent access to antiparasitic therapy, and inadequate veterinary and environmental controls. High seroprevalence and environmental contamination rates are reported across Latin America, yet toxocariasis is absent fro...

Mr. Editor We have read with special attention and interest the article by Condemayta et al (2018), where they present the results of an epidemiological study on the prevalence of infection by the intestinal parasite "Balantidium coli" and the risk factors associated with its transmission. in humans and pigs in two populations of the Acora District, province and Department of Puno, Peru. In general, we agree with the content of the article. However, we wish to comment on the taxonomic and systematic status of "Balantidium coli", and the corresponding nomenclature of the enteroparasitic disease it causes, which we consider require updating in light of the new evidence and findings presented in the scientific literature of the area, especially those of the molecular type. In this sense, it should first be indicated that the genus Balantidium belongs to the Phylum Ciliophora (Class Litostom...

Introduction: Toxocariasis is an infection caused in canines, felines, humans, and other vertebrates by species of the genus Toxocara, such as T. canis and T. cati. The embryonated eggs of these parasites are the main form of acquisition of the infection both for definitive hosts, such as the dog and the cat, respectively and for paratenic hosts, such as humans and other vertebrates. Toxocariasis infection in humans causes visceral larva migrans syndrome. When deposited on park soils, environmental contamination becomes a risk for environmental, human, and animal health. Objective: To systemically estimate the prevalence of Toxocara spp. eggs in park soils in Latin America. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to evaluate the prevalence of Toxocara eggs in park soils in Latin America, defined by copro-parasitological, molecular and immunological techniques. We se...
