Science is key to solving the challenge of managing ecosystems for sustainable development. How do we achieve the benefits that result from the transformation and exploitation of ecosystems, and at the same time preserve ecosystem services and protected areas? In the ecosystem of the Everglades, a subtropical wetland located in South Florida (United States), an economic and environmental transformation occurred in the middle of the 20th century. Today, the Everglades Restoration Program is addressing the challenge of maintaining the benefits of the transformed ecosystem while at the same time protecting and restoring Everglades National Park. An analysis of the governance of this program highlights three important aspects of the system with respect to science. First, the primary decision-making body is the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force, a diverse group of 14 a...

This thesis report: LABOR AND SOCIO-CULTURAL INSERTION OF PERUVIAN IMMIGRANTS OF THE SAN SIMON-UNITED STATES CAPITAL ASSOCIATION OF TORINO'S CITY - ITALY, as a result of a social fact from the description and analysis of the ways of life of a group of immigrants residing in the city of Torino. In this way the theoretical and ethnographic aspects are taken into account according to the demands of the research. The problem of migration is a fact that has been marked and continues to mark transcendence at an economic, social, political and cultural level both in the country of origin and destination. In this way, millions of Peruvians have found new opportunities abroad, in the case of this research, in Torino, a city that has welcomed miles of Peruvians to insert in the world of work, which usually occupy women in the domestic sector. However, the insertion also refers to the socio-cultura...

Teaching methods have changed. The case method is an active methodology that seeks, from a real experience, the simulated exploration by the student in order to develop in him the ability to make decisions. Before, teaching was centered on the teacher, today it revolves around the student and the teacher. Therefore, both will learn. For this, it is based on a concept or construct, or theory that is the object of study, which is recreated from a real experience and that allows simulated exploration, in order to develop, in the student, his capacity for decision making. For this, the student must carry out research of a bibliographical nature, about either information on the variables or updates on the object of study, which allow him to learn more about the reality of the unit of analysis. The objective of this work is to make a conceptual review of the case study for pedagogical purposes ...

This article analyses the process of cultural mediatization of celebrities, taking as a case study the self-presentation of the singer Rosalía (@rosalia.vt) on the social network Instagram. For this purpose, a double quantitative and qualitative analysis has been carried out of the 449 publications made by the singer between 1-1-2018 and 31-7-2020, the period in which she achieved international fame with the release of the album El Mal Querer. The descriptive statistical analysis of this sample allows us to determine the singer's posting patterns, the categories to which she associates her image and the use she makes of the affordances of this social network. The iconological analysis of the sample allows us to determine the cultural references that Rosalía associates with her image within a globalized, urban and flamenco-inspired context. This study concludes that Rosalía appears as ...

The aim of this article is to understand how day-to-day student classroom participation in an ordinary secondary Chilean school contributes to civic education towards democratic competency. The qualitative method adopted an ethnomethological perspective and used participant observation, unstructured interviews and document review techniques, all later analyzed inductively. The results show a lack of definition of classroom participation in institutional documents, sporadic implementation of participating events and a consensual passive role of students in the classroom. It concludes that classroom participation tends to teach students to consider their interactions as interruptions when dealing with their life outside the classroom and illegitimate in their expression, contributing negatively to their development of democratic competency.

Purpose: Written communication differences across cultures can set the tone for effective or disastrous business relationships. Although English has been the go-to language in business, managers from different countries can significantly differ in how they convey the firms' information. This study explored these differences by examining the documentation presented by foreign corporations as part of their initial public offering (IPO) in the USA, particularly Chinese firms. Design/methodology/approach: This work examined cultural-related differences in written communications by looking at foreign corporations' descriptions of their strengths, strategies and challenges included in F-1 documents submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as part of the IPO process. The sample consisted of 97 American depositary receipts (ADRs) identified in the Bank of New York Mellon's ADR d...

The paper analyzes the case of Adriana Smith, a pregnant woman who suffered brain death in Georgia, USA, and whose body was kept on life support to preserve the fetus despite her family’s opposition. From the perspective of Peruvian law, it examines the legal definition of death (irreversible cessation of brain activity) and the legal nature of the corpse as a sui generis object, protected by post-mortem rights derived from prior personality. It highlights that, in Peru, the unborn is recognized as a legal subject from conception, with special protection of life, constitutionally and legally acknowledged. Article 10 of the Civil Code allows the use of corpses to prolong human life, requiring that the family be informed but without needing their consent. Thus, preserving pregnancy through the maintenance of bodily functions would be legally valid, although it entails a delicate balance ...

We present the case of a 7-year-old male child with Goldenhar syndrome associated with an epibulbar choristoma. The patient presents a homogeneous tumor, rounded in shape, with well-defined borders, of a soft consistency, vascularized, approximately 9x10 mm, yellowish-white in color, adhered to the sclera and cornea, with hairy formations on its surface, located at the level of the sclerocorneal limbus of the temporal-lower quadrant of his right eye. The histopathology study showed the presence of hair follicles and sebaceous glands, immersed in a stroma of fibrous connective tissue with a superficial squamous-type lining, which defined the diagnosis of limbar epibulbar dermoid. Conjunctivaplasty was performed to cover the scleral defect and use amniotic membrane to cover the corneal and scleral defect. The limbar epibulbar dermoid is the most common type of conjunctival choristoma and s...

In a totally globalized world where the use of digital platforms is increasingly taking center stage, it is relevant to study the relationship of these technologies with companies and how they have influenced them. Therefore, the present research aims to characterize the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Social Networks (RRSS) of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) advised by the Arica Business Center, Chile. In a stratified random sample (n = 120), a survey was applied to find out the knowledge, use, frequency and impact that ICT and social media have on companies. The results showed that 73% of the clients of the Arica Business Center use ICT, especially the laptop or desktop computer, which 68% declare to use it several times a day, followed with 73%, the smartphone. The greatest impact that ICT has within companies is related to communication with cu...

In this work we study theoretically the ferromagnetic resonance in a spin-valve. For this purpose, we propose a phenomenological model for the density of Helmholtz free energy taking into account the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, shape anisotropy, interlayer exchange coupling and exchange bias. Considering this energy density we solve the Landau-Lifshitz equation in spherical coordinates and in the resonance condition. In this way, we obtain the dispersion relation and, as a consequence, the frequency versus the resonance field. These results are in good agreement with the literature. Additionally, we apply the model to the IrMn/Co/Ru/NiFe system and study the magnetic coupling interlayers, where the non-magnetic layer (Ru) has a thickness of 3.2 nm. The results indicate the existence of an antiferromagnetic coupling with a strength of couping of Jbl + 2Jbc = −4.3 erg/cm2.
