The aim of this study was to systematically review the scientific evidence of diseases associated with bronchiectasis in cats, providing a better approach to diagnostic tests and related treatment. The OVID®, SciELO Citation Index® and Redalyc® search platforms were used. A research question was defined, and search terms were used to find relevant articles in the databases. Only original articles and case reports published in indexed journals and under peer review processes were considered, then filtered by title, abstract and full text. Subsequently, the reference lists of the definitive articles were searched for additional information (snowballing). Eight definitive articles were considered for the presentation of results and discussion (seven published in English and one in Spanish, between 1993 and 2019). From the information collected in the eight studies, it can be inferred tha...

The aim of the research was to carry out a systematic review about the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection in dogs and cats, as well as the genomic analysis of virus samples isolated from dogs and cats worldwide. For this, the systematic review was structured based on PRISMA’s protocol. Articles were obtained using the following keywords: SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19, dogs, cats, epidemiology, animal transmission, pets, companion animals, animal reservoirs and zoonosis. Additionally, all of SARS-CoV-2 genomes isolated from dogs and cats worldwide, reported in GISAID's EpiCoV™ database, were selected and analyzed through Nextclade’s tool for the generation of the respective phylogenetic trees. The exposure – natural infection with SARS-CoV-2 from January 2020 to October 2021 of 100 dogs and 108 cats positive by the RTq-PCR technique was reported worldwide. Furthermore, 141 SARS-CoV-2 gen...

In May 2005 and April 2006, in the region of Khastor, Potosi, Bolivia, a female pampas cat (Leopardus colocolo) was captured. The efficacy of a protocol for chemical immobilization for animal handling, clinical evaluation and collection of biological samples was evaluated. It was used ketamine hydrochloride (KH) + medetomidine hydrochloride (MH), and antagonized the latter with atipamezole (AH). In 2005 were administered 4.38 mg/kg of KH + 0.04 mg/kg of MH, requiring 2 successive doses of 1.76 mg/kg of KH. In 2006 were administered 5.0 mg/kg of KH + 0.05 mg/kg of MH. MH was antagonized with 0.22 and 0.25 mg/kg of AH in 2005 and 2006 respectively. The induction time and chemical immobilization in both campaigns were very similar but the recovery time from anesthesia in 2006 was shorter than in 2005. The clinical evaluation indicated adequate health and physical status. The hemograms showe...

The aim of this study was to assess postoperative pain from elective ovariohysterectomy or orchiectomy surgery in 66 felines (41 females and 25 males), using the UNESP-Botucatu multidimensional pain scale with emphasis on subscale 1 and 2. The analgesic protocol used included meloxicam 0.05 mg/kg and tramadol 3 mg/kg plus ketamine 10 mg/kg IV induction and maintenance at 5 mg/kg. The evaluation was carried out when the felines were without anesthetic effect and could reliably manifest behavioral disturbances indicative of pain associated with surgery. Pain assessments were conducted by two observers. The results showed that 89.4% of patients presented mild postoperative pain and 10.6% moderate pain. Moreover, 87.8% of females (36/41) and 92% of males (23/25) showed mild pain. None showed severe pain. The use of multidimensional scales like UNESP-Botucatu are key to adjust post-surgical a...
