The letters between Ricardo Palma and Rafael Altamira, some of them published in the General Epistolary of the traditionist by the Ricardo Palma University, and others in the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library (the last one coming from the Altamira legacy deposited in the Secondary Education Institute Jorge Juan de Alicante) are a first-rate source for research on cultural relations between the two intellectuals. This relationship is paradigmatic of the reestablishment of the bridges of communication brought about by the events of ‘98, in the context of the controversy between Latins and Anglo-Saxons that marked the inter-century period. El objetivo de este trabajo de investigación dar a conocer la historia de la humanidad se muestra ante nuestros ojos y nos posibilita el hecho de comenzar a entenderla y saber de ella en el preciso instante en que el primer dibujo hace su aparición en las pinturas rupestres de las Cuevas de Altamira (Santander, España). Dichas pinturas son la primera manifestación histórica que se posee del dibujo. Desde ese instante acorde con la evolución del ser humano también el dibujo evoluciona como una forma de expresión. Starting from these, a reflection is made about the reason of being of each one of them and challenges are put forth that allow the libraries to evidence their contribution to the betterment of the teaching and learning processes, as well as the generation and diffusion of scientific knowledge.
