Perceived changes in basic beliefs and growth related to life events were examined in three studies. A representative sample (N = 885), a sample of students and their families (N = 291) and a sample of students (N = 245) responded with a list of positive and negative life events, a scale of changes in basic beliefs and a post-traumatic growth scale. Positive events were strongly associated with changes in basic beliefs, while only weak associations were found for negative events. In addition, negative changes in basic beliefs were associated with growth only in negative life events and positive changes in basic beliefs were generally associated with growth.

For the first time in Buenos Aires we had find material evidence of the practice of the Jewish religion during the colonial period. The finding of a tile floor engraved on its underside with a Star of David, from a colonial upper class house, introduced us on the field of the situation of the Jewish population in the Spanish colonial world.

This paper examines whether compliance with COVID-19 mitigation measures is motivated by wanting to save lives or save the economy (or both), and which implications this carries to fight the pandemic. National representative samples were collected from 24 countries (N = 25,435). The main predictors were (1) perceived risk to contract coronavirus, (2) perceived risk to suffer economic losses due to coronavirus, and (3) their interaction effect. Individual and country-level variables were added as covariates in multilevel regression models. We examined compliance with various preventive health behaviors and support for strict containment policies. Results show that perceived economic risk consistently predicted mitigation behavior and policy support—and its effects were positive. Perceived health risk had mixed effects. Only two significant interactions between health and economic risk w...

Cyanidation (leaching with cyanide) is a common yet complex surface process in hydrometallurgical practice, and its effectiveness in extracting the metal of interest is often affected by the nature of the mineralogical species that are present. Little is known about surface processes on acanthite (a silver sulfide) and how its various facets respond to cyanidation in aqueous solution. Therefore, in this work, some properties of both bulk acanthite (Ag2S) and its (001), (022), and (1̅21) surface facets have been studied by density-functional-theory (DFT)-based calculations to elucidate reactivity trends and competitive adsorption (initial stages in the surface process of cyanidation) between cyanide and other species present in the leaching liquor. It is found that CN– binds by its C-end to silver sites on the acanthite surface with adsorption energy similar to that of OH– but strong...

This research sought to answer the question: Is there a relationship between the degree of cohesion of the teams and the quality level of the work environment perceived by employees of the University of Montemorelos, Nuevo Leon, Mexico? The research was a quantitative, descriptive, correlational, and cross country. The population consisted of 334 employees, of which a sample of 211. To collect data two instruments were developed: the first aimed at measuring the cohesion of teams and the second focused on measuring the perceived work environment, comprised of 20 items each. As a result it was observed that there is a significant positive linear relationship stronger grade between the variable cohesive work teams (CET) and the variable labor climate (CL). When running the test statistic r value was found to .803 and a significance level of .000 p. The results of the investigation showed t...

We prove that every finite-expansive homeomorphism with the shadowing property has a kind of stability. This stability will be good enough to imply both the shadowing property and the denseness of periodic points in the chain recurrent set. Next we analyze the N-shadowing property which is really stronger than the multishadowing property in Cherkashin and Kryzhevich (Topol Methods Nonlinear Anal 50(1): 125–150, 2017). We show that an equicontinuous homeomorphism has the N-shadowing property for some positive integer N if and only if it has the shadowing property.

In Brazil, most Eucalyptus plantations are located in regions experiencing periods of water shortage where fertilizers are intensively used to achieve high productivity. Fertilization can affect water use. However, the effects of fertilization on tree growth patterns during extreme droughts periods remain unknown. A throughfall exclusion experiment was set up in Sao Paulo State-Brazil to study the effects of potassium (K) and sodium (Na) fertilization and their interaction with water supply in the growth of Eucalyptus grandis trees over an abnormal season of 6 months of extreme drought in comparison with that in normal seasons, as well as the differences in responsiveness to intra-annual meteorological variability. Arranged in a split-plot design, the factors were water supply (37% throughfall exclusion vs. no throughfall exclusion) and fertilization regime (K, Na, and control). Basal ar...

The understanding of the prehistoric Andean cultures has shifted noticeably in recent decades, attributing to them higher levels of achievement, both in qualitative and quantitative terms. One of the central elements in the re-evaluation is the realization that a strong economic base, including agricultural production, was in existence from at least 2000 years before the present. This paper brings together some of the newer evidence, to show that the local base was even stronger than is currently acknowledged by scientists working in disparate specialisms. We focus on the pre-Inca, Tiwanaku state which centred on the Lake Titicaca basin.

This paper studies the potential association between two geographic indicators, distance and altitude, with the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) for 1,874 district in Peru by using the National Census of 2017. We investigate whether higher altitude or longer distance is associated with higher MPI values. For this purpose, we use the distance of each district to three different potential spaces of reference. First, we use the shortest distance to the metropolitan area of Lima; second, the shortest distance to the capitals of coastal departments; third, and finally, the shortest distance to the sea. We obtain three relevant results. First, we find evidence that altitude is statistically significant and positive associated with variation of MPI among districts. Second, the distance with respect to the sea appears to be more relevant to explaining differences in MPI than the distance to ...

Bankruptcy is one of the most important entrepreneurial problems studied by the Financial Theory. Despite this great effort, there is not a significant progress in order to predict the economic failure. In this way, the evidence suggests that this problem, related to the experimental design, is still present because of two main reasons: ignorance about bankruptcy process and the use of the accounting information as the unique input to construct the predictive models. In order to solve those problems, the RPV Model included both qualitative and accounting information with excellent results. So, the Earning Power Theory –upon which the RPV is based– could cause problems of specification and structure in the model. Empirical results not only verify those suspicions, but they made a stronger model possible by introducing to the equation ERC values adjusted to the risk.

This study offers a model for the construction of cognitive scenarios based on a systemic approach, and on the identification, tracking and projection of qualitative trends. The model is part of the exploratory strategy of a flexible knowledge-bases decision support system, designed by the author himself to handle unstructured environments. The concept of cognitive scenarios is based on qualitative trends and provides an effective and functional frame of reference for decision makers who need to project complex situations over long periods of time and in which many factors affect the behavior of the results. It is concluded that cognitive scenarios generate a series of intuitive behavioral patterns able to support strategies that, in general, are not able to be managed by conventional descriptive or normative models. In addition, cognitive scenarios provide a stronger support to develop ...

This study is a social history of the emergence of modern science in Peru. It analyzes the variables that permitted the beginnings of scientific research based in around specialized journals and institutions at the turn of the century. It examines the influence of nonscientific criteria such as Nationalism in the research done on two Peruvian diseases: Verruga and Mal de Altura. Finally, it analizes the social and intellectual factors that restrained a stronger development of peruvian science during the period.
