The literature of aging explores the deterioration of the human body, while feminist literature explores the problems of gender equality. According to Miguel Sabido (1989) and Albert Bandura (1989), the media, particularly the telenovelas, tend to use stereotypes that portray women and the elderly population negatively. Sabido uses the concepts of education and entertainment to unveil how telenovelas teach societal behavior, allowing a path for social discrimination towards them. Through these concepts, the researchers have demonstrated how the Mexican and Colombian telenovelas negatively portrayed the elderly people, especially women. Such analysis was not done in vain, as it had the purpose of giving agency to the elderly by allowing them to have to power of how they want to be represented in the media.

The increased cultural activity in Peru within the last years requires a media complement that contributes to advance in this sector and educate the public. In addition: culture, education and economy are key factors for social development and media must assume their responsibility by not just emitting informative messages, but also instructive, critic and orientated ones. According to academic and operatic music specialists and professionals, cultural journalism in Peru is not fully developed: in many situations great importance events are omitted and in others only trivial aspects are published. In that sense, to address such issues information professionals require a constant preparation and a high sense of ethics so they build a solid section with useful information for the public.

In this paper we analyze the characteristics of the adventure novel of ordeal, which Bakhtin identifies as one of the three essential types of novelistic unity. The exegesis of such chronotope reveals a pattern not unlike that which articulates a popular sub-genre of science fiction: space opera. Our conclusion is that both chronotopes are virtually identical except for a very relevant aspect, temporal reversibility, absent in space opera, because of a lesser protagonism of the event. This is the result of a heroic axiology that is more typical of the epic than of the novel, an aspect that is also analyzed in the paper.

The following article has the objective of knowing and valuing the presence of western music in our culture and its influence as a contribution to a new musical development in the Lima area, trying to answer the question: How does western music approach and does it contribute to the popular musical activity in Lima? It can be affirmed that the learning of the European musical structure, especially opera, took great advantage of popular music, thus achieving the consolidation of new sounds, adhered to a need for socio-cultural identity. For this, a musical analysis of the melodic structure of a proclamation composed by Rosa Mercedes Ayarza is made, which embodies in its conception these two aspects, the academic and popular. Since the theme seeks to analyze, interpret and understand cultural and social events, a critical historical-cultural methodology is used to gain knowledge of the mus...

In the last few years, despite major breakthroughs in the access to information and education, the representation of women in the media seems to have remained in a stereotyped image ofold. A particular example of this appears in telenovelas, which constitute a crucial element in theformation of women’s identity, but tend to suggest images ranging in an easily identifiable “good/evil” binomial, without regard for a person’s complex nuances. However, there are examplesshowing an attempt to move beyond such frames. One of them is the Colombian telenovelaEl último matrimonio feliz (The last happy marriage), starting from a social fact (the increasingnumber of failing marriages) to portray, in a more realistic way, women who have to overcomesuch a situation.

In the context of virtual communication systems, the new rationale of social participation and the mechanisms used for the appropriation of the resources, contents and meanings that are broadcast through telematic networks are analyzed here from a political anthropology viewpoint. A case study is used in this paper to highlight how a globalized protest is developed against the presentation of a South American soap opera, La Tormenta (The Storm), which was broadcast on the Internet. Users’ capacity for action to convert the Network into ameans of organization and critique and collectively react against the power of the media is analyzed here. This political action went beyond the virtual field to the real world, thus allowing the recognition of rights. This uprise in the network of consumers of cultural products has contributed to transform conventional mechanisms of citizen participati...

This essay introduces a collection of scholarly contributions, from inside and outside of Peru, to the study of the Andean colonial world. These essays address once again Guaman Poma de Ayala’s chronicle in its 405thanniversary in 2020. Unknown, invisible, mute for almost 300 years, the ladino Indian’s “letter to the king” reveals itself as a talkative text since its discovery at the Royal Library in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the beginning of the twentieth century. In a bit more than 100 years, Guaman Poma’s work became a talkative text while keeping its enigmatic and cryptic nature. In order to provide a context to the essays that follow, this introduction provides a review of proposed readings related to Guaman Poma’s works in the context of the celebration of its 400th anniversary. It also offers a reflection about the open nature of Guaman Poma area studies.
