description En los últimos tiempos, las bibliotecas públicas a nivel mundial, se han sentido de alguna manera amenazadas ante la era de la información y el acelerado crecimiento del internet, llegando a creerse obsoletas por una parte de la población. Sin embargo, estas instituciones se han percatado que la mejor manera de sobrevivir y repotenciar su función en la sociedad es enfocándose en sus fortalezas. Cualquiera puede “googlear” información en la web pero sólo los bibliotecólogos saben cómo y dónde encontrar la información de mayor calidad y relevancia. Así mismo, las bibliotecas públicas están enfatizando su rol social sirviendo como centros de reunión para su comunidad al propiciar eventos y talleres artísticos y culturales; como también creando espacios agradables que inviten al usuario a hacer uso de ellos y a estar en compañía de otras personas. Lamentablemente, la realidad de las bibliotecas públicas en el Perú está todavía lejos de las tendencias mundiales. Se puede decir que no existe una tradición bibliotecaria arraigada en los ciudadanos y tampoco una preocupación directa del Estado por incentivar a crear una. Un modelo de biblioteca pública central que llame a ser usado, podría ser el germen de la renovación de estas instituciones a nivel nacional siguiendo tendencias a nivel mundial, para así ayudar a recuperar e impulsar el gusto del peruano por leer, por educarse y por vivir en comunidad a través de la cultura.
