description La presente investigación pretendió determinar el efecto antibacteriano del aceite esencial de Origanum vulgare (orégano) frente a sthaphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Utilizó aceite esencial de orégano y cultivos bacterianos de Staphylococcus aureus, para lo cual se prepararon 05 placas por cultivos bacteriano conteniendo agar Mueller Hilton, también se prepararon discos de papel y se embebieron con los tratamientos oxacilina y aceite esencial a concentraciones de 100, 75, 50, 25% se incubaron y se evaluaron el tamaño de los diámetros de halos de inhibición. Se obtuvo un porcentaje de rendimiento del aceite del 2,6%, se identificaron los parámetros fisicoquímicos como color, olor y sabor, densidad e índice de refracción encontrándose dentro de los parámetros normales, mientras que el aceite de orégano puro presentó mayor eficacia antibacteriana (83,67%). Por tanto, se pudo concluir que el aceite esencial de las hojas de orégano es antibacteriano sobre cepas de Staphylococcus aureus, in vitro.
