description La estadística demuestra que los caninos superiores permanentes se hallan entre las piezas dentarias que con mayor frecuencia quedan retenidos en el paladar. Es de suma importancia ubicarlos en el arco dentario debido a su papel fundamental en la estética facial, estética dental, desarrollo de la arcada dentaria, razones funcionales y oclusales. La retensión se debe a la falta de espacio en la arcada dental y a su vez que este es la última pieza dentaria en erupcionar del maxilar superior. Los diversos estudios coinciden en que se deben diagnosticar por medio de una evaluación clínica, radiológica y radiográfica meticulosa. Definir las probables complicaciones que la acompañan y personalizar las alternativas de tratamiento según cada caso. Se sugieren diversas maneras de manejarlos, iniciando desde controles periódicos, precaver la retensión palatina con el método interceptivo, tratamiento ortodóncico-quirúrgico o la extracción como última elección.
