Resultados: No se apreciaron diferencias significativas respecto a las frecuencias de sexo, anemia, diabetes, hipoalbuminemia, plaquetopenia, leucopenia, proteína C reactiva elevada entre los pacientes con artritis reumatoide expuestos a uno u otro tratamiento (p>0.05), no se apreciaron diferencias significativas respecto a la efectividad clínica con el empleo de leflunomida comparado con metotrexate en pacientes con artritis reumatoide (p>0.05); la leflunomida tiene mayor seguridad que el metotrexate en el tratamiento de pacientes con artritis reumatoide (p<0.05). Conclusiones: Existen diferencias en la seguridad, mas no en la efectividad de leflunomida comparada con metotrexate en pacientes con artritis reumatoide del Hospital Víctor Lazarte Echegaray.

Material and methods: An analytical cohort study was carried out in which 128 patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis were included, according to selection criteria which were divided according to the use of leflunomide or methotrexate, the chi square were calculated. Results: No significant differences were observed regarding the frequencies of sex, anemia, diabetes, hypoalbuminemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, elevated C-reactive protein among patients with rheumatoid arthritis exposed to one or the other treatment (p>0.05), no significant differences were observed regarding the clinical effectiveness with the use of leflunomide compared with methotrexate in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (p>0.05); leflunomide is safer than methotrexate in the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (p<0.05).
