Se aplicó una encuesta estructurada para evaluar el nivel de conocimientos sobre salud bucal de las madres de familia y a los niños se les aplico un examen oral, utilizando los índices epidemiológicos de: Caries Dental (ceo-d), Placa bacteriana (Greene y Vermillion. IHO-S), previo entrenamiento por un odontopediatra mediante un estudio piloto, obteniendo un valor de kappa mayor de (0.80) de acuerdo intraevaluador, y confiabilidad (Alpha de Cronbach) en el nivel de conocimiento (α=0.70). Se encontró que el nivel de conocimiento de las madres fue bueno con 59.1%; según edad en madres de 31 a más años fue bueno 24.4%, según el grado de instrucción las madres con estudios técnico y/o superior presentaron un nivel de conocimiento bueno 30.7%, según el índice (ceo-d) de los niños tienen un nivel muy bueno con 42.5% y el índice (IHOS) tienen un nivel bueno con 52.0%. Se halló relación significativa entre las variables, aplicando el análisis estadístico que fue el Análisis de Chi - cuadrado, obteniéndose un p= 0.000 (p<0.05). Concluyendo que las madres tienen un buen nivel de conocimiento sobre salud bucal en relación a la salud oral de sus niños de 3 a 5 años.

The study was prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive and observational; 127 mothers were evaluated with their children from 3 to 5 years of age. A structured survey was applied to assess the level of oral health knowledge of the mothers and children were given an oral examination, using the epidemiological indices of: Dental caries (ceo-d), Bacterial plaque (Greene and Vermillion. IHO-S), after training by a pediatric dentist through a pilot study, obtaining a kappa value greater than (0.80) according to intra-evaluator, and reliability (Alpha de Cronbach) at the level of knowledge (α = 0.70). It was found that the level of knowledge of the mothers was good with 59.1%; according to age in mothers aged 31 and over, 24.4% was good, according to the level of education, mothers with technical and / or higher education had a good knowledge level of 30.7%, according to the index (CEO-D) of the children. very good level with 42.5% and the index (IHOS) have a good level with 52.0%.
