Sumario:The present study aimed to determine the relationship between family abandonment and depression among older adults treated at the Regional Hospital of Loreto, Iquitos, during the year 2025. The research followed a quantitative methodological approach with a descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational design. The study population consisted of 120 older adults, from which a sample of 92 participants was selected from the Elderly Care Center of the aforementioned hospital. The interview technique was applied, and the instruments used were the Family Abandonment Scale and the Geriatric Depression Scale of Yesavage (GDS). Data processing was carried out using the statistical software SPSS version 27.0 in Spanish. Descriptive statistics were applied through absolute and relative frequencies, and inferential tests were used to determine the relationship between the variables, considering a 95% significance level (α ≤ 0.05). The results showed that 82.6% of the older adults did not experience family abandonment, while 17.4% did. Regarding the level of depression, 42.4% presented a mild level, 34.8% a moderate level, 16.3% a severe level, and 6.5% a normal level. In conclusion, a statistically significant relationship was found between family abandonment and depression in older adults (p = 0.000). Moreover, an inverse correlation (r = 0.678) was observed, indicating that higher levels of family abandonment are associated with greater levels of depression among older adults.
