Todo lenguaje conlleva en sí un “esquema de pensamiento”. Benjamín Lee Whorf sostiene que hay una diferencia fundamental entre las lenguas habladas en el ámbito de las culturas europeas y las habladas en otros entornos culturales, como por ejemplo las lenguas amerindias. Esta diferencia se expresa no sólo en las gramáticas y la sintaxis, sino en conceptos básicos como el del tiempo y del espacio.
