La parte educativa que consiste en el manejo de información así como la parte motivadora que conducirá al desarrollo de conductas positivas en cuanto a la remoción de placa bacteriana juegan un papel importante. Asimismo el control mecánico y la utilización de medios auxiliares de higiene seguirán siendo los principales agentes en cuanto a remoción de placa bacteriana se refiere. El éxito del tratamiento periodontal a largo plazo estará determinado por una terapia de mantenimiento adecuada y periódica evitando así la reaparición de la enfermedad. Por último, la aplicación de nuevas técnicas como la terapia fotodinámica y el uso de probióticos serán descritos como una alternativa eficaz en la prevención y tratamiento de la enfermedad periodontal.

The educational part that consists of the management of information as well as the motivating part that will lead to the development of positive behaviors in the removal of bacterial plaque play an important role. Also the mechanical control and the use of hygiene auxiliaries will continue being the main agents in the removal of bacterial plate is concerned. The success of long-term periodontal treatment will be determined by adequate and periodic maintenance therapy thus avoiding recurrence of the disease.
