La medula espinal recorre el agujero vertebral que inicia desde el bulbo raquídeo hacia la altura de la primera o segunda vértebra lumbar y es el centro de conexiones tanto sensitivas, motoras y autonómicas del cuerpo humano. Una lesión de la medula espinal se divide en dos, tanto primaria como secundaria, donde la primaria es como se produjo el daño y la secundaria es cuánto daño se produjo en el traumatismo, esto producirá alteraciones que pueden ser permanentes o disminuir con el tiempo dependiendo de cómo y cuán rápido sea su intervención en ello.
