Objective: To determine if there is a relationship with religion, religious activities, and mental health in adult inhabitants of Cerro de Pasco and Huánuco in Peru. Materials and methods: Observational and crossanalytical study using the database of previous epidemiological studies prepared by the Honorio Delgado - Hideyo Noguchi Institute of Mental Health in 2013, with a complex probabilistic sample of 2 965 adults. Instruments: ICD-10 Mini- International Neuropsychiatric Interview modified; Mental Health Questionnaire (includes aggregate questions about religiosity and suicide indicators); Mezzich's Quality of Life Index; Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale; Block Resilience Scale; Diener's Life Satisfaction Scale and a Sociodemographic data sheet. Result: Not professing any religion and not carrying out religious activities presented higher prevalence of mental disorders, lower averages of positive mental health variables, and higher prevalence of homicidal ideation. Conclusion: There is a relationship between religious beliefs, religious activities and some variables of positive mental health and negative mental health in inhabitants of Cerro de Pasco and Huánuco of Peru.

En 2016, la Asociación Mundial de Psiquiatría señaló que se requiere más estudios sobre la religión en psiquiatría que abarque diferentes áreas con antecedentes culturales y geográficos. Objetivo: Determinar si existe relación entre la religión, las actividades religiosas y la salud mental en los habitantes adultos de Cerro de Pasco y Huánuco (Perú). Materiales y métodos: Estudio observacional y transversal-analítico utilizando la base de datos de estudios epidemiológicos previos, realizados en el 2013 por el Instituto Nacional de Salud Mental Honorio Delgado - Hideyo Noguchi con una muestra probabilística compleja de 2 965 personas adultas. Instrumentos: Entrevista Neuropsiquiátrica Internacional (MINI) modificada CIE-10; Cuestionario de Salud Mental; Índice de Calidad de Vida de Mezzich; Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg; Escala de Resiliencia de Block; Escala de Satisfacción con la Vida de Diener y Ficha de datos sociodemográficos. Resultados: Quienes no profesan alguna religión presentaron relación estadísticamente significativa con un menor promedio de calidad de vida (=7,59, ES=0,17, p=0,034), una mayor prevalencia anual del episodio depresivo (OR=3,03, IC95%=1,19-7,7, p=0,048) y una mayor prevalencia de vida de ideación homicida (OR=3,55, IC95%=1,45-5,67, p=0,035).
