The methodology used was quantitative, with a non-experimental design. The technique employed was a survey, and the data collection instrument was the «Questionnaire to describe the use of ChatGPT in academic writing by university students» was used. It was found that students do use ChatGPT in academic writing, mainly due to the speed with which the tool generates precise and relevant content. However, they also pointed out disadvantages such as the risk of plagiarism and the need for constant verification. It was concluded that students perceive ChatGPT positively for its speed in generating content, and that the main disadvantages are the risks of plagiarism, dependency, and the need to constantly verify the information provided.La investigación se desarrolló a partir del creciente uso de tecnología basada en inteligencia artificial ante la falta de habilidades de redacción de los estudiantes que inician su etapa universitaria. En el estudio se tuvo en cuenta una muestra no probabilística, por conveniencia. En este sentido, se consideró a discentes de primer ciclo de diferentes programas de estudio y de cualquier universidad de la región Lambayeque. La metodología llevada a cabo fue cuantitativa, con diseño no experimental.  La técnica empleada fue la encuesta; y el instrumento de recolección de datos, el «Cuestionario para describir el uso del ChatGPT en la redacción de textos académicos en universitarios». Se halló que los estudiantes sí utilizan ChatGPT en la redacción de textos académicos, debido a la rapidez con la que dicha herramienta genera contenido preciso y relevante; pero señalan también que existen desventajas como el riesgo de plagio o la necesidad de verificación constante.
