Estas líneas fueron pronunciadas por el autor el 7 de febrero de 2021 con motivo de conmemorarse el 188 aniversario del nacimiento de Ricardo Palma, en un acto organizado por el Instituto que lleva su nombre y es órgano académico de la Universidad Ricardo Palma. El autor no se refiere a la biografía del escritor, tampoco realiza un análisis de sus tradiciones peruanas, ni de su vinculación con la política, ni su labor como periodista. Se limita a echar una mirada general para rescatar la importancia de Palma en nuestras letras y la cultura en general a partir de sostener el carácter de clásico que ostenta.
