The study reveals how fishers perceive the sea as a living entity governed by spiritual norms and ritual practices; Furthermore, the fishers' technical language reflects their experience and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge. All of this allows us to understand how these elements shape a local knowledge that articulates experience, tradition, and adaptation to changes in fishing activity. It also highlights the importance of documenting and valuing this local knowledge as part of intangible cultural heritageEste artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación cualitativa con un enfoque etnográfico en base a entrevistas y observación del trabajo de pescadores artesanales en Casma, una pequeña ciudad costera en el norte peruano. Se explora la cosmovisión y los conocimientos sobre el entorno natural del mar y las técnicas de trabajo. El estudio revela cómo los pescadores perciben el mar como un ente vivo regido por normas espirituales y prácticas rituales; asimismo, y cómo el conocimiento empírico sobre las especies del mar y el entorno natural permiten la pesca exitosa mediante diversas herramientas que ellos mismos fabrican. Todo ello permite comprender cómo estos elementos configuran un saber local que articula experiencia, tradición y adaptación a los cambios en la actividad pesquera.
