Anthropometric nutritional status of entrants to the first academic semester of the Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia of the Universidad Nacional Micaela Bastidas de Apurímac, 2017-2019

The objective of the study was to describe the body mass index of first academic semester students of the Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry School of the National University Micaela Bastidas from Apurímac (UNAMBA). The research design was of an analytical cross-sectional type at three different moments. The total of first-semester students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry of UNAMBA from 2017 to 2019 participated in the study. The nutritional status was determined anthropometrically, at through the Body Mass Index, based on current protocols of the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization. The data processing and analysis was performed with the Microsoft Excel 2010 and SPSS 23 programs. Categorical variables such as gender and admission semester of the students were statistically compared with the Chi-square test with a confidence level of 95%. The results report that the average rage height of the students was 1.57 m, they weighed 59.73 kg and they were19.75 years old at the time of university entry. 72.2% had a normal nutritional state (95% CI=65-79.4%); 20.4% were overweight (95% CI=13.9-26.9%) and 7.4% were obese (95% CI=3.1-11.8%). No significant difference was found between sex, academic semester of admission to the university and the BMI. It is concluded that the average height of the students was lower than that reported in national and international university students. Despite being an extremely poor region of Apurímac, no thin students were reported.
