Beta-lactam antimicrobials including penicillins, monobactams, and cephalosporins are among the most widely used in both animals and humans; Therefore, the presence of ESBL-producing E. coli (ESBL-EC) has the ability to hydrolyze these antimicrobials, leading to resistance against this class of agents, which represents a potencial threat to human and animal health. This study aimed to determine the presence of ESBL-EC in fecal samples from cattle at two slaughterhouses in Lima, Peru. A total of 260 fecal samples from cattle were collected at two slaughterhouses: S1 (n=134) and S2 (n=126). Antibiotic discs of cefotaxime (CTX) 30 µg, aztreonam (ATM) 30 µg, ceftazidime (CAZ) 30 µg, cefpodoxime (CPD) 10 µg and ceftriaxone (CRO) were used as screening method. While, antimicrobials cefotaxime - clavulanic acid (CTX-CLA) (30/10 µg) and ceftazidime - clavulanic acid (CAZ-CLA) (30/10 µg) were used in combined disc method for ESBL-EC phenotypic confirmation. The interpretation results follow the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Finally, was determined that 23.5% (61/260) of fecal sample presented ESBL-EC. Our results demonstrate that cattle intended for human consumption are carriers of ESBL-EC representing a potential public health risk.   Keywords: ESBL-EC, antimicrobial resistance, cattle

Los antimicrobianos betalactámicos como las penicilinas, monobactámicos y cefalosporinas, se encuentran como los más utilizados tanto en animales como en humanos. Por lo tanto, la presencia de E. coli productoras de BLEE (EC-BLEE) con capacidad de hidrolizar a la mayoría de los betalactámicos representa una amenaza potencial para la salud humana y animal. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la presencia de EC- BLEE en muestras de contenido fecal de ganado vacuno procedentes de dos mataderos de Lima, Perú.  Se obtuvieron 260 muestras de contenido fecal de ganado vacuno de dos mataderos: M1 (n=134) y M2 (n=126). Los discos de antimicrobianos cefotaxima (CTX) 30 µg, aztreonam (ATM) 30 µg, ceftazidima (CAZ) 30 µg, cefpodoxima (CPD) 10 µg y ceftriaxona (CRO), se utilizaron como método de tamizaje. Mientras, que los discos de cefotaxima - ácido clavulánico (CTX-CLA) (30/10µg) y ceftazidima - ácido clavulánico (CAZ-CLA) (30/10 µg) se utilizaron para confirmar la presencia fenotípica de EC-BLEE. Los resultados de la interpretación siguieron las directrices del Instituto de Estándares Clínicos y de Laboratorio (CLSI). Finalmente, se determinó que el 23.5% (61/260) de las muestras fecales presentaban EC-BLEE.  Nuestros resultados demuestran que el ganado vacuno destinado al consumo humano es portador de EC-BLEE, lo que representa un riesgo potencial para la salud pública. Um total de 260 amostras fecais de bovinos foram obtidas de dois matadouros: M1 (n = 134) e M2 (n = 126). Os discos antimicrobianos cefotaxima (CTX) 30 µg, aztreonam (ATM) 30 µg, ceftazidima (CAZ) 30 µg, cefpodoxima (CPD) 10 µg e ceftriaxona (CRO) foram utilizados como métodos de triagem. Enquanto isso, discos de cefotaxima-ácido clavulânico (CTX-CLA) (30/10 µg) e ceftazidima-ácido clavulânico (CAZ-CLA) (30/10 µg) foram utilizados para confirmar a presença fenotípica de ESBL-EC. A interpretação dos resultados seguiu as diretrizes do Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Ao final, 23,5% (61/260) das amostras fecais apresentaram ESBL-EC. Nossos resultados demonstram que bovinos destinados ao consumo humano são portadores de ESBL-EC, o que representa um risco potencial à saúde pública.
