| Sumario: | Objective: To identify the socioeconomic factors that affect the efficiency of municipal solid waste management in the San Martín region, Peru. Methods: An applied study was developed with a quantitative approach, non-experimental design and explanatory-causal level. Secondary data from the National Registry of Municipalities, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and official budget reports were analyzed. Two stages were implemented: in the first stage, the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach was applied to estimate the levels of efficiency in municipal solid waste management; in the second stage, a Tobit econometric model was used to identify the socioeconomic factors that explain this efficiency. Results: Of the 66 district municipalities analyzed, 7 showed optimal levels of efficiency. The Tobit model showed that the Human Development Index (HDI) and the level of extreme poverty are variables with statistically significant effects. Conclusion: Socioeconomic indicators such as HDI and extreme poverty have a significant impact on the efficiency of municipal solid waste management. Consequently, the design of public policies aimed at improving solid waste management should incorporate these factors in order to contribute to the success of these policies. |
