Descripción
Sumario:This study examines non-verbal predicative constructions in Mapudungun, with the aim of providing a systematic description from a typological perspective. The objective is to analyze the morphosyntactic strategies employed by the language to encode non-verbal predication, specifically within nominal, adjectival, and adverbial domains. The methodological framework is based on the model proposed by Creissels et al. (2025). It combines the analysis of existing Mapudungun grammars with the elicitation of sentences containing non-verbal predicative constructions. Three main strategies are identified: juxtaposition, copulative suffixes (-nge and -le), and copulative verbs (müle- and nge-), each associated with distinct functions depending on the type and semantics of the predication. Results indicate a significant overlap between nominal and adjectival predication in Mapudungun, whereas adverbial predication appears more structurally and functionally distinct. The copulative suffixes -nge and -le are shown to derive from grammaticalization processes involving copulative verbs and serve to indicate permanent and contingent properties, respectively. In conclusion, Mapudungun exhibits innovative and conservative strategies for encoding non-verbal predication, underscoring its typological complexity and the importance of further research into its grammatical structures and diachronic development.
