The article analyses the technical specifications of two projects undertaken in 1858 and 1862 for the construction of a bridge over the Rímac River in the city of Lima. These projects constituted the antecedents of the final design of the Balta Bridge, constructed from 1869 onward. The objective is to demonstrate, through the analysis of technical specifications and budgets, how the context influenced the projection of a public work in the republican period. The article is explanatory, uses primary sources, and establishes the following methodology: a study of the context; a reconstruction of the projects based on technical specifications and budget items; and finally, a summary of the information in comparative tables of budgets and listed according to their type. The results indicate that both projects responded to contextual factors associated with the 19th-century process of modernization, as reflected in their technical specifications, geometry, materials, and costs.
