Descripción
Sumario:The aim of this paper was to evaluate the competitiveness factors of the cattle activity in Atalaya province, Ucayali, Peru, in order to propose commercial strategies that increase the income of cattle farmers. Literature concerning competitive factors was reviewed, to subsequently measure, quantitatively, based on the Likert scale, the results of achieving competitiveness in each of the proposed factors. The results showed that the cattle activity, considering the production of milk and meat, present a low level of competitiveness in the following factors: technological level (15.78 points), associativity (6.68 points), knowledge of the market (16.37 points); and market access (14.2 points). A competitive level was only obtained in the technical assistance factor (18.68 points). Based on the deficient results of the evaluation of the factors of competitive strategy of production costs, product differentiation, and market segmentation in the cattle activity of Atalaya, the following strategies were proposed, among others: commercialization: training in the production of improved pastures, creation of business plans, establishment of strategic alliances with private companies that provide technology, use of benchmarking; and participation in cattle fairs. Of all these, the commercial strategy that results in the greatest impact on the increase in income for Atalaya farmers corresponds to their participation in regional cattle fairs, since prices double, compared to traditional sales.
