Grief involves mental representations and behaviors linked to an affective loss that seeks to accept this reality and adapt to it. Although it is a complex and difficult process to face by people of any age, the long-term negative effects are much higher in children because it is a risk factor for future psychological disorders, and precisely for this reason a psychological intervention with solid theoretical bases is necessary that focuses not only on the child but also on their caregivers and other close people. The present study followed a theoretical research design since it is a detailed review or update of 30 investigations related to grief in children. The information was organized under four themes: concepts and prevalence, characteristics of bereavement in children according to their stage of development, risk factors and protection factors, and, communication of the news and psychotherapeutic approach. There is evidence that corroborates the differences between grief in children and grief in adults, with children being the most affected because they are still developing, therefore, constant monitoring is suggested throughout the process, resolving all kinds of questions, avoiding euphemisms and speaking sincerely.
