Therefore, it was recognized that there was a need to strengthen the supervision and regulation of the financial sector. In this sense, financial education has received more attention, since it is essential to protect consumers of financial services. In this context, this article critically examines financial education programs due to the inherent problems in financial decision-making, since the success of these initiatives is seriously affected by the findings of behavioral economics and the impact of the socioeconomic context on the financial situation of the household. Finally, the conclusions are presented in order to be considered in future studies.La crisis financiera de 2008 desvirtuó la capacidad de autorregulación de los mercados y la capacidad de decisión de los agentes económicos. Por tanto, se reconoció que era necesario reforzar la supervisión y la regulación del sector financiero. En ese sentido, la educación financiera ha recibido una mayor atención, debido a que es esencial proteger a los consumidores de servicios financieros. Bajo ese contexto, en el presente artículo se examina de manera crítica los programas de educación financiera debido a los problemas inherentes en la toma de decisiones financieras, pues el éxito de estas iniciativas se ve gravemente afectado por los hallazgos de la economía del comportamiento y el impacto del contexto socioeconómico en la situación financiera del hogar.
