Se realizaron entrevistas con los principales actores de este proyecto. Se concluye que el proyecto piloto REDD + tuvo que enfrentar muchos desafíos antes de comenzar a generar dinero con la venta de créditos de carbono. Adicionalmente ha tenido que enfrentar la oposición del ex gobernador de Madre de Dios, quien promovió las actividades mineras cerca del área del proyecto. Si bien es cierto que este proyecto piloto REDD + ha ayudado a detener la deforestación en el área del proyecto, no está abordando a los principales responsables de la deforestación y degradación forestal en la provincia de Tambopata.

Nonetheless, some studies suggest that this program has faced some challenges during its implementation. This study focuses on a REDD+ pilot project developed in the Peruvian Amazon, in an area considered as the biodiversity capital of Peru and one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots. This study aims at describing (1) the main economic, environmental, and social limitations/challenges that have faced the “Tambopata National Reserve and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park REDD+ project” during its implementation, and (2) to discuss what general lessons can be learned from this project. For this, the study comprises a literature review on cases studies of REDD+, and then a documentary analysis of documents that relate specifically to the REDD+ project examined. Likewise, semi-structured interviews were carried out with the main actors of this project. The third step is to explain and discuss the field results. This study finds that the REDD+ pilot project has to face many challenges before starting to generate money from the sale of carbon credits. In this particular case, the project did not have to deal with land tenure issues nor social problems during its implementation. Nonetheless, it has had to face stiff opposition from the former governor of Madre de Dios, who promoted mining activities close to the project area. Furthermore, this case has shown that this REDD+ pilot project has helped to halt deforestation in the project area.
